Roots Organic Soil...WTF!!??

I have been growing for about 9 years now and have NEVER had a single problem with pests. I have been using FFOF for the entire time. I switched to Roots Organic due to the mixture change with OF soil as of late.

The Roots seemed to be decent shit until I noticed a small army of fucking fungus gnats creeping around my girls!! It's not a massive infestation and they aren't doing any harm at this point except being annoying, but I know how they can get unchecked/killed. Went and got some Mosquito Dunk today. 'Gonna get them little fuckers. Got some strips and some apple cider vinegar to catch the flying fuckers as well.

Has anyone else had this problem with Roots soil? Has anyone heard/read about others having issues with Roots? I'm switching back to FFOF and simply picking out the tree trunk sized pieces or bark.

FWIW, I don't think there is such a thing as a clean soil, organics = pests. I've heard of issues with FFOF containing both gnats and aphids.

Yes I had this same problem with the roots soil and thats the reason I stopped using it, that and the fact it seems to have a lot of wood in it and I didnt like the splinters I would get when hand mixing it. I use a different soil now from a local shop here in Eugene, the owner used to works for the other shop here in town that carriers the roots stuff. He told me he felt the sameway about the roots soil and that he made sure there soil didnt have the problems the roots has.

Then I had the most amazing stream of luck for 8 years consistently using FFOF. I never had one issue.

WOW! I had the Exact same problem with my last 2 batches of 707roots soil and even the last batch of FFOF and they were all from the same store in about 3 months time.i think all the soil in that store is probably now contaminated from how many fucking fungus gnats and root aphids. I planted a variety of plants in my Roots soil and mixed in perlite, worm castings, and dolomite lime. Within a week, maybe even days, EVERY plant in the Roots mix was fucked up severely from the roots of all my plants being eaten alive by the aphids and larva of the fungus gnats. Its so fucked up man. Ive tried everything from every Safer brand spray to Azamax, then Take Down then End All which were both recommended from the same store i got the soil, and they said both of those will for sure kill my gnats and aphids which it certainly did not. now its 2 months later and they are impossible to get rid of and ive talked with others who say they are having the same problem. This is by far the Worst set back to date. Nothing has fucked up my grow so badly. I really hope to find something that kills them without hurting the plant. You may start to see what looks like a mag or cal def. and theres a good chance its the roots being fucked with. The aphids also leave a toxic slime that turns the roots brown and they look all dried out and dead. Hopefully you areny hit this bad.

Not sure about roots, but I had similar problems with a Miracle-gro (not for MJ) that I bought a couple of months back. Had seedlings and insects swarming through it. Took the shit back to the store and demanded a refund. MG Seedling starter was the product. Seems like most big and small brands are starting to lose quality. I've about had it and if it wasn't for keeping mother plants I'd never touch a bag of potting mix every again.

I have been using Roots for the last 2 years and have never had a problem. I think it all has to do with luck and maybe where you live!? Where your buying it from. Or maybe its just after 9 years this never happend so it bound to happen. Good thing its gnats not mites huh! Good luck and youll love the Roots soil as I do. A little less yield but a taste you wont get any where else.

Nah, not enough gnats to cause a problem yet. That's why I went and got the Mosquito Dunks at Lowes today. They are safe for the plant and kill off the larvae in the soil where they breed. It won't kill they flying fuckers, but you can catch them with strips or little bowls full of apple cider vinegar.

Well, I used the Mosquito Dunks and placed several cups of apple cider vinegar around the room and the fungus gnats seemed to be under control. Still switching back to FFOF.

Glad you have gotten that under control! I recently switched stored and have not had that problem yet so i def. agree its the store. Hey stuff, which seems to work better, the dunks or bowls of vinegar? Im just using sticky yellow traps at the moment.

I'm using Roots 707 for my first grow, and I've had problems with fungus gnats as well. I've switched to FFOF for my second grow, we'll see how things work out.

Ive just switched from Canna Bio to Roots soil mix and im having the same gnat issue. But im used to it by now the dunks or some gnatrol do the trick . The new powder gnatrol seems to be working better too.

I've used ffof/pro mix 75/25 ratio for a long time.. 7 plus years and never had any pest of any kind..However some of my local buddies have pest in there ffof.. I really think its all in how the shop stores there soil, outside, in, climate controlled ect...the shope thet use stores them on pallets outside in a storage lot ..My shop has a climate controlled shed..Best of luck w/ those little buggers......
