Slang from my youth.

Dirt
Kick
Gong
twigs
backlot
commercial (as in it's only commercial so it was $25 a z)

Gong was also used for quality weed so maybe it doesn't count.

In the 40's weed was called tea, In the 30's if you smoked you were a viper, I think that is jazz slang . Also pretty sure it was called weed just like nowdays.

I'm going to post this because I thought some of you might get a small kick. This is from the william s burroughs book junky.

This takes place in 1946 or 47 in NYC. He buys a kilo of "first class new orleans weed" for seventy dollars so 2.2 pounds. He sells it "75 cents a stick 70 sticks to the ounce." Sounds like he could have made a tidy profit. He might have said an ounce price but I can't remember

interesting! thanks. Added the book to my reading queue

!!! I would actually recommend to you the audio book version of junky read by William Burroughs himself. I found one on a torrent with the y spelling of junky. Hearing it from the man itself Is the way to go, he knows how to tell a story. If you get a paper version get the 50th anniversary edition paperback somewhere used on the cheap. the other versions have mistakes or sections taken out. The book is kinda a field report on the underground culture of the late/40s. Its also the first book I had read the didn't bullshit at all or lie about junk addiction.

Back in the day in Texas I used to get a four finger sack that was referred to as a "Lid". You ask someone for a lid these days and all you get is a blank look .

Off topic, but kinda funny nonetheless. My old man bestowed on me that he and his buddies used to tell their parents that they were trying to grow Chinese Elms. He said one of his buddies started it when he found out that Chinese Elms look alot like cannabis.

I informed him that I think they screwed it up along the way somewhere, because really it is Japanese Maples that look like weed, not Chinese Elms. I kinda see their confusion though! Damn ignorant biggots!

This is a word I made up or at least that's what I claim it is LARFY! It means leafy, airy Premature no density! I use this alot.

We used to call it shit, which meant it was a bad thing.

We also used to shit outside and cook inside. Now we shit inside and cook outside!

MagniKhan mentions "Lid". Back in my day a Lid was how much weed could sit on the overturned lid of a Maxwell House coffee can. It was the street equivalent of an ounce.
A Nickel bag yielded five joints. A dime bag, ten. Unfortunately, Willie Nelson's statement in Half Baked, "I remember when a dime bag cost a dime." was never true, but it's funny.

Circa 69-72ish.
There were two types of "Lids" in the Midwest. $12.00 would be measured as 3 one ounce "shot glasses" while $15.00 was 4 "shots". A "Nickel bag" was 1 "shot".

LBs were usually bricks wrapped in construction paper at between $120.00 to $150.00.

Hey older stoners,

I have a quick question. My old man, who would have been 53 now, used to refer to schwag as "Haymarket Riot." ...has anyone else heard that?
I'm 61 and i have heard of Haymarket Riot.
But it was a late 60s band named after the actual Haymarket Riot:
"...a demonstration and unrest that took place on Tuesday May 4, 1886, at the Haymarket Square in Chicago, and began as a rally in support of striking workers. An unknown person threw a bomb at police as they dispersed the public meeting. The bomb blast and ensuing gunfire resulted in the deaths of eight police officers, mostly from friendly fire, and an unknown number of civilians. In the internationally publicized legal proceedings that followed, eight anarchists were tried for murder. Four men were executed, and one committed suicide in prison, although the prosecution conceded none of the defendants had thrown the bomb."
The band sucked.

used to cut the feral hemp growing along RR tracks in central illinois. lay it out in sun for a few days, it would turn the prettiest gold color. when properly cured, 4 or 5 joints would give you a headache...:)

1980's, in Arizona, the worst weed was called 'homegrown' followed by 'dirtweed' (if it was brownish).

Back in the day...70s we called it rag-weed or junk weed. We hated smoking that stuff. Now I wish I had some to smoke, funny...

That's so f'n true, I purposely would ask people if they wanted to smoke homegrown because I didn't want to puff down every person who was at the local nightly Phx party, especially at the Fweekend 35th Ave Powerlines parties out in the desert, ever go to that massive drug market back in the big hair day of the early 80's
Gawd, I'm 50+ and we used to rock those nights on out ATC's, dirtbikes, 4x4's and other toys everybody had. Started out as a small group of us 20 or so, and turned into 1000's of kids after a dozen years before LEO finally shut it down due to those kids dieing in the gold mine.

It was Shakedown St for sure, row after row of cars, people selling their mexi' dirtweed, coke, meth, L, and shrooms, and Adam(X) was legal and sold in headshops all over PHX, only a few of us did Adam others had the local skunk bud, and then way back in the 70's we called them lids, 2 finger lid, 3 finger lid, 4 finger lid, we used to buy the 40 dollars 4 finger lid back in 72 all the time from the older hippies.
A lid was sold in a plastic sandwich bag, and the weed was put into the bag and you would use 1,2,or 3 fingers to measure it from the bottom of the bag to the top of the fingers.

In the 80's it was just called buds, classified as dirtweeed, and yes homegrown was tossed around because of all the $30.00 large brown paper shopping bags of leaf being sold in AZ by certain unnamed growers in Phx. Then if it was nasty brown, black ammonia weed or brown buds it was called dirt or ditch weed or mexi depending upon who you delt with, if the buds had decent smell and shape, but were colored reds, yellows,a nd green with brown, it was buds, even green skunk buds were just called buds, and then it was called schwag in the early 90's
my experience, damn I'm stoned and getting old
