Hanging Bare Bulbs

I currently have a horizontal Econowing reflector. I'd like to remove the socket from the reflector to hang the bulb vertically. Anyone familiar with the Econowing: Is this possible?

I don't know about that reflector specifically, but it should be pretty straightforward how to remove the socket. a couple screws or maybe a rivet or 2.

Some bulbs cannot be hung vertically. Check with the supplier first. Electrical issues.

i half way figured it out. there is still a slab of metal attached to the socket so I can't do a complete 360, but it will do

the socket should have 4 screws on it. 2 inner for power wires and 2 outer for mounting to the reflector.

removing the socket assembly from the reflector is pretty
straight forward and simple but High Country is right, some
bulbs can only be used horizontally, some vertically.

run the bulb in the wrong orientation and you run the risk of fire.

If you unscrew the socket off the bracket and put it back facing the other way you have something to hang it from

I put a caribiner through the 'top' hole and use a chain to adjust the height as the plants grow .... I also tie the cable to the chain so the lamp hangs straight down

If your reflector is riveted to the bracket then just drill out the rivet heads, you can always pop rivet it back on if you want to

For your own sake I'd think about putting a steel cage around the lamp

As far as 'can the bulb be hung vertically?' .... since 2006 all HPS lamps have been universal, unless it has a symbol or stating it must be used horizontally (which means its old or very cheap Chinese) you're OK

Wattage intended? ...... for 600 watts a 16" Diameter cage stops them scorching when the fan is on (all the time the lamp is on)

Hello, im new on this forum but in no way am I new to growing vertical with bare bulbs. Would you mind elaborating on the theory that certain bulbs are for horizontal and vertical. I have used many differnet bulbs for years, vertically hung and did not have a fire or any problems. I consulted with the manufacturers of my bulbs that I've used and they "say" theres no difference. Do you have any facts to support this or is this just "hear say." Thanks for your time..

I ran into this issue when starting up a 400w MH.

If I remember right there was some specific language regarding bulb orientation. Look for the MH bulbs that say Universal.

HPS can be hung any which way.

Good Luck,

i hang bare bulbs, and i used econo wing reflectors. i was gonna try the same thing as you. was gonna cut that piece of metal that was attached to the socket. but than i realized the way the socket was that the power wire came out sideways. and it woulda been a bitch to hang straight, so i just bought new socket assemblies for like 15 bucks.

Also my experience...

But IF there are rascals to watch for...please, let us know.

I guess not everything is meant to be hung... LOL
