friend wants a water filter... not too worried about ppms but chlorine and chloramine... smallboy/tallboy dechlorinator would prob be fine and cheaper...BUT, everyone acts like Reverse osmosis the tops! while slowly working and wasting water...

even necessary? not hard water... handwatering, straight coco, PBP, and seperatly, bioCanna?

also does coco REALLY eat Cal-Mag Big time?

Thanks friends, most appreciated hard to find info on this subject.

bump.. i wanna know about the cal mag question as well.

if im doing gh micro/bloom 6/9 mls pre gallon.. is 5 ml pre gal of cal mag enough??

I just bought a Tall Boy and have been very happy with it. Now I can use the microbial products... (turns out chloramine doesn't really evaporate well)

After doing some research, I discovered you could buy the housings and filter cartridges for half what I paid for the Tall Boy; but it does take some work to source the parts and assemble; I did't have the time. Search 20" filter housing, I believe the Tall boy is a 4.5" but I will have to look. To get chloramine you need some sort of Granular Activated Carbon or carbon block filter I think.

I was also on the fence about RO, but after doing some research the flow rates looked too low. Since my water is only 80ppm I decided to start with a chloramine/sediment filter, which would serve as a pre-filter for a RO system if it turned out I needed the RO; since the chloramine will supposedly damage the RO membrane and not be filtered out.

Since I am cheap, I put it in a five gallon bucket with a coiled garden hose on the output and a 3/8"stainless flex hose hooked up to the input side. The stainless flex hose has a 3/4"female hose thread connection which I can attach to any of the faucets around the house/garden. The stock plastic tubing works fine, I was just concerned that repeated connection/disconnections would cause a leak sooner than later? It is convenient leaving the Tall Boy in the bucket at all times, making it portable and easy to store without having to permanent mount.

hope that helps
