Hey folks I have recently recieved some 30 yr old Acapulco Gold seeds that I am having a tough time germing. I was wondering if anyone has experience with using Giberrelic acid (GA-3) to wake old beans up?

Thanks

I've used EPIN for germinating decades old seeds. Recently got 50% on some old SSSC seeds that weren't even properly stored

Ethylene gas, it is given off by rotting bananas. The trick I heard was to put the seeds in a ziplok bag along with some pieces of overripe banana (ask the local greengrocer or superstore for an old banana they were gonna throw out) and the ethylene released will help the seeds germ.

A weak solution of GA3 is also supposed to work.

Best bet is to do some googling and see what is being used in plant science, a good example to look for info is when they tried (and succeeded) to germ some thousands of years old date palm seeds found under the remains of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.

soak a paper towel in 100 ppm GA-3, germinate as usual.

you may get better results with more ppm i dont know

give it a try

worked good when I did it.

That's correct with the ethylene gas and the use of overripe bananas. Some scientists from Israel used it to germ some cacti seeds.

Humic acid & Sea-Crop could also be used for germinating the seeds.I hope they will pop those old Acapulco Gold seeds.Good luck!!!

Namaste :plant grow: :canabis:

I've heard that one before, it came to mind right away, then I read your post, so it must be right.

And now he's banned? He did ask for his account to be removed, but banned? Hmmm.

Hey are you sure ethylene has an effect on dry seeds?
I have a feeling they should be soaked before that but don't take my word for it. I'll try it myself once I get a banana :D

I have used GA3 for germing cannabis seeds, just not old seeds. 200 ppm mix was used as a soak for 4 hours before going into paper towel- similar time to none used for beans to pop, but growth was pretty quick to start. Didn't have a control going to say for sure that growth was faster than usual, but it seemed like it to me.

Yep, at least with some seeds the soaking method is used. I guess it's worth a try.

"Because ethylene is produced by ripening fruits (Salisbury and Ross, 1992 ), pieces of apple and banana were added to jars of water. An unpeeled golden delicious apple was washed, cut into quarters, and each quarter was cut into three pieces of equal size. The banana was peeled and cut into 2-cm sections. One piece of apple was placed in each of three jars containing 125 mL of distilled water, and one piece of banana was placed in another set of three jars. The piece of apple and banana floated at the surface. Fifty exhumed seeds were placed in each of the six jars containing water and a piece of fruit. Three control jars had water and seeds but no apple or banana."
