Light recommendations

Hey guys,

I’m just about to begin a micro grow after downgrading from a 250w HPS cabinet and was after a bit of advice on lighting. I’m based in Australia so a lot of the lights you guys use are hard to come by and/or extremely expensive. P-PL’s are worth more than gold around here, larger then 24w CFL’s are not available unless you go for a 130w and HPS lights smaller then 150w are nonexistent and/or “sell your first born” prices….until now

I had planned on using a 130w CFL as they are readily available but have recently found a store selling 150w HPS digital ballasts and wondered if the HPS would be a better option? My only concern was the heat as my 250w did get pretty warm

My grow space is a flat pack kitchen cupboard measuring 700mm high x 400mm wide x 300mm deep (27.5inches x 15.7inches x 12inches) and will be vented via a 125mm 155-188CFM MixedFlo inline fan (same as your S&P fans) thru a 4inch Foothills carbon scrubber

Cheers…any info you guys can give would be great!

I don't have much experience with fluoro's, but, if you go with HID, I think the rule of thumb is a minimum of 50watts per sq/ft. At roughly 1.3 sq/ft a 70w HPS is just over that and a 100w'er is about 75w's per sq/ft (a good ratio). Your fan should be enough to handle that, though. With CFL's, your cab will be easier to cool and being relatively cheap, may be the best option for you. Linear tubes can be mounted straight up and down and overdriving them would certainly be at the top of my list of options.

150 watt hps would be cooler than the 250 for sure..as long as intake doubles exhaust, you would be fine...
same with those cfl's you saw..they would work great too..I have 172 watts in a pc so anything is possible bro..
happy hunting!!
