Becoming a medical grower/patient - American Citizen

Hey all you Canadians,
I am joining your ranks next year and moving to Waterloo, Ontario area. I am wondering if it'd be possible for me to get a medical license even though I am not yet a Canadian citizen. I have ADD that I've had medical history with (may get it checked out once again to have a more recent history) and have athritis type chronic pain due to a knee injury. I think I could qualify but only if I found the right doctor and was able to as an American.
I plan on living in CA for the next couple years (10+ most likely) and am wondering how long it takes to be a citizen if I do need to become one to be medical.

You obviously can't become federally exempt until you are a canadian citizen. You can buy from most compassion clubs if you have a card from an american state though.

What do you mean federally exempt? A PM from another member told me that it is possible to get a liscense. Any more info on that Hulk?

The medical marijuana program here is run by health Canada (federal govt), I am pretty sure you have to be a Canadian citizen and have a care card to even go to a doctors office. It's totally possible but you have to get citizenship first.

How would I go to a doctors office in Canada for any other issue then if I'm going to be living there the next 8 or so years. I feel like there has to be a way around it.

You DON'T have to be a Canadian Citizen to get your Health Canada MMAR Card! Steve Kubby got his while he was living in Canada and he NEVER became a Canadian Citizen

All that is needed is a dr to sign the HC forms. They will also need a specialist to concur as the new regulations require a DR signatur and a specialist.

Are you living here for 8 years+ on a work visa or illegaly?

I was never trying to shut you down but I really don't see how this could work?

So how hard is this actual process? Its hard for me to estimate.. It sounds so easy now, but from others people experiences is this a hard thing to do? How long of a time frame should I expect?

CLP its years for some.
I have a severely damaged wrist (arthritis and more) I have waited 13 months to get into the specialist, I can't imagine and American getting in sooner. I have now seen the specialist and my doc refuses to sign, so i m back looking for a GP to sign the forms. You will need to see multiple docs.

Well at first it took me 3 years to find 2 drs willing to sign the forms because at that time you had to have 2 signatures.

Once you find a specialist and a dr who is willing to sign the Health Canada forms then it takes a minimum of 8 weeks for them to process your paperwork. It would be easier if you had a specialist that would sign your forms.

Is it best to have a pretty long medical history regarding the issue? I'd really love to become medical for multiple reasons. It's just so much safer etc. I have some knee pain from an ACL tear a couple years ago that still causes problems but its not THAT bad. I think my main thing that I could apply with is ADD/ADHD. When I was younger I went to all kinds of specialists etc, this means I'll need to go to another in Canada? Would it be best to check out another in the states now before I move to Canada to have an even longer/more indepth history?

Are there any places that direct you towards pro-medical marijuana docs in Ontario? I'll be living in waterloo/kitchner area.

Marco, was your buddy here on a Visa or as a Land Immigrant/Premanet Citizen? Cause those are the only way someone Not from Canada is able to access our medical system... But just coming to Canada and staying with hopes of applying to the MMAD is unrealistic. And you can not apply as an American, as a permanent resident, yes, with a Visa, maybe, but as an American just being here, no

Also, with your ailments, it would be very hard getting approved up here, while Marco is right that the specialist not having to approve, either the specialist or your GP must make some type of link showing how cannabis will benefit in your treatment, unless you fall under cat 1.

It is much, much easier to have the specialist on board and willing to include Cannabis in their report.

Also HC is taking ages with applications and renewals... My renewal this year is now 2 weeks late and has taken 10 weeks in counting, and this is just for a renewal

Steve Kubby was a REFUGEE when he applied he WASN'T legally in Canada and eventually went back to the USA. As long as you have a Canadian Dr / Specialist sign the forms that is all that is needed. I know another patient living in Canada who ISN'T legal and he is an exemptee, he pays the dr out of his own pocket which is the norm for those who are NOT residents.
