First Grow: Himalaya Blue Diesel in Uruguay

I had the same experience as you that these small plants make big roots and after three weeks my Automatic Hindu Kush had outgrown 1 litre pots.

My experience with bone meal is that when used as a top dressing or even dug into the top layers of soil it always goes moldy with a white fuzzy mold. Even when boiled it still goes moldy but the tea didn't.

My Automatic Hindu Kush was 18" beneath my all blue ufo led light and I fell for the forums' maximum light hype and lowered the light to 14" and could see a bad reaction in the leaves so I raised it back to 18" again. Then I noticed the leaves bending down for several weeks like yours are and tried to figure out what was wrong. I kept getting the feeling the light was too bright and they were trying to avoid it. So I moved the light to 24" and within a day all the leaves were pointing upward towards the light. So I see in your photos the leaves bending down and wonder if you have too much light. Don't forget these genetics come from the land of the midnight sun and even though the sun is 23 hours, it is much weaker than equatorial sun. Even the afghanis in the background come from mountains where there is heavy cloud cover that restricts the light.

It seems curious and strange to me to meet someone from the other side of the world practially and you are just going into fall while we are just starting a glorious early spring thanks to El Nino.

Thanks for all the info - although the droopy leaves have got 80% better in the past 24 hours after their compost / guano tea

Today in Uruguay its definitely Autumn / Fall - wet and windy - a day to sit by the fire

Weekend Update Time Again

This week has seen a MASSIVE growth explosion in the two oldest plants this week - they are 5 weeks old already, so according to the web info on this strain the full cycle is 8-10 weeks, so they're half way through.

I'm going to keep them on compost teas for another 3 weeks and then start flushing (depending on how they're doing).

Nothing major happened this week other than another mistake that hopefully doesn't seem to have caused any lasting problems.

I made a batch of compost tea for the younger two and noticed when I was giving it to them that the smell has not good - didn't really register in my brain (!) and I kept on watering with the tea.

Opened the grow box a few hours later and it stank of .......shit !

Did some reading and it seems like the tea I made 'went bad' and should definitely NOT have been used (although as mentioned I did)

THe plants and smell today both seem fine so hopefully I've got away with it !

Until next week......

Thanks bro. I was askin not only because i will b growing hbd, but because i have 8 mi5 seedlings that were stunted from ph problems, that should all be about to show since im at day 20. But they are pretty behind, only just now growing their third set of leaves. but they are finally shaking it off, and starting to grow again. Do you remember how many sets of leaves yours had at the time they showed?

have a look at post number 38 on page three for pics of them at 3 weeks - I have to say there were pretty small at that stage and its only in the past 7 days that they've started shooting up everyday.

I made two mistakes in this early period that I will change next time:

1. Not close enough to the lights for the first two weeks
2. starting them in small pots - next time 6.5L pots from the start

Weekend Update 8th May

Another week gone and all the plants are shooting up now.

No major problems except that the small 'stubbly' one's leaves have changed colour to a lighter green and show all the classic signs of a nitrogen deficiency, although the older two are now in week 6 and according to the seed info on the website the cycle is 8-10 weeks, so it may be that the leaves are doing this naturally as they near the end.

I gave it a 'nitrogen boost' tea of Chicken Guano and Sea Bird Guano two days ago, just in case, so lets see what happens !

Weekend Update 15th May

Another week gone, looks like the sun may have left until Spring judging by the weather today but there's been lots of growth in the past 7 days.

The old two (pics 2+3) are 7 weeks old today and the pistels started to turn amber two days ago. Waiting for a Loupe to arrive in the next few days to have a look at the trichomes, but everything is looking very resinous and the smell is fruity and amazing !

The guide on this strain says 8-10 weeks so the oldest ones will get their final tea on Monday and then I'll starting flushing with distilled water.

The youngest one (from centre on pic 1) is starting to show sex and its interesting to see how much bigger its getting than the others at the same stage by transplanting it early - it certainly seems to bear out the theory of starting them in big pots straight away to get bigger yields and this is something I will do with grow two, starting next month (2 East Ryder, 2 Diesel Ryder and 2 more of these is the plan)

Finally, I'd appreciate some advice on whether to remove (or not) yellowing leaves. Both of the elder two now have a lot of yellowing leaves and some are curling (see pic 4) - should I be removing these leaves or just leaving them in place until the manicure time ?

Until next week.......

Lookin good! You've gotta be very excited!
My plants are doing well, though still small and young. Only problem is I now seem to honestly have too many to give enough light to.
Congrats, keep us updated as you harvest, cure, & smoke.

I just got some HBD seeds and only one popped so far, but I would like to know more about this strain, and I'll probably pop more seeds this weekend.

No, do not take off the yellowing leaves, fan leaves are the bud factories of the plants, leave them on as long as possible, even if they are yellow, as long as they are still attached to the plant they are providing it with the sugars needed to make buds (the ultimate goal here right?)

Weekend Update

Another week flies by. The two girls in the pics are 8 weeks old today. According to the seed info, the full grow cycle is 8-10 weeks so they should be (and are by the looks of it) getting very close to harvest.

I lot of the pistels are now turning brown but looking with a loupe at the trichomes, they are all still white.

According to the Jorge Cevantes book, the optimum time to harvest is when they change from translucent white to milky white (or the other way round, can't remember without re-reading) and looking at the pics in his book its v. hard to tell the difference between the two and then....when looking on the plant its even harder. I think I'll wait until a few of them start to turn amber and then harvest, so I would expect that to be by this time next week (which is uber exciting). They were given their last compost tea 6 days ago and are now just been flushed with distilled water.

If anyone has any advice on when to harvest and what to look for, it'd be really useful !

More soon.......

id give them more food before you start with straight water and give them atleast 2-3 more weeks. they seem to take forever to turn amber but its definetly worth waiting, the high from a cloudy harvest is too rushy/paranoid/uneasy. how tall is that little tiddler?

Thanks for the info - the stocky one is about 21cm but one massive bud !

Weekend Update

Another week gone and these babies are now 8 and 9 weeks old respectively.

The 9 week ones look like they have one more week to go - a lot of the pistels are now brown but the trichs are still white-ish so another week before 24 hours darkness and then harvest.

I'm still not so sure about the harvest date for the eldest two as I've never gotten this far with a grow before (!!) but I posted some close ups a couple of days ago and asked for advice and the concensus seemed to be another week or so....

So the next update is when the fun begins........
