inline 6" fans elicent or vortex?

I'm getting ready for a 1st indoor op, and have fan Qs
for heat controll I'll be using a 6" cool tube
on a 1kw lite.
I'm looking at either an elicent 6" AXC 150B 309cfm
or a Vortex VTX600, 6" 449 CFM in-line fan.

Ive heard the elicent pulls more air than they are rated and the vortex's are over rated on their cfm's
the elicent is a bit more expensive, about $30.
they both are fairly quiet so thats no an issue.
any pro's con's between these two I should know about?
anyone have a personal preference and why?

I also plan on adding another 1kw lite and want to hook them both on the same 6" duct.
will the eleicent handle two 1 kw lites at its current cfm rating?
how long of a run can I expect to make with one.. and two lites hooked up?

Another thing is I want to run a speed controller on the fan, the guy I plan on buying from offers an elicent controller for $30.
it looks like a standard one I can pick up lowes for 1/2 the price, and it has a regular wall plate for residential use, like one you'd find for a ceiling fan in your liv. rm.
what considerations do I need to take in when using and choosing a speed controller.

here is some of the info on the elicent fan concerning
this speed controll.

AXC fan speed is infinitely variable to the max R.P.M. with the addition of a solid-state speed control.

last Q, :D do I set the fan up to pull or push the heat through the duct, and what kind of 6" ducting is availble for this kind of use.

I was in exactly the same boat you were in just yesterday.......ended up finding a Can-Fan 6' HO (High Output) for $160 new. Website shows 392 at 0'', but the box shows 440 cfm (free air flow). Thing is a beast. Really wonder about how much quieter the Elicent would have been...but am happy with my choice at the moment.

Elicent all the way baby!!

Hands down the Elicent! I crunched the numbers a while back and the Elicent 150B is more efficient than the Can Fan.
It has a better CFM per watt ratio so YES its worth the extra 30 bones.

Yes you can cool two 1k lights with a Elicent 150 B.
Im doing it right now with no adverse effects.
Just make sure your intake air is somewhat cool to begin with.Night time air is almost always good depending where you live.

If I were to guess Im doing my 2k lights at about 20+ feet easy.

I have 150B's that are over 10 years old and still running strong!
Speed controlers can hook up no prob and yes u can use the dimmer style from Lowes

To answer your last Q you...If using only one fan you should pull the air. The 150B is fine doing this.
Ultimately the best is to have one fan pulling and one pushing at the same time to create positive and negative pressure equally.

Wanna see why I dont believe in Vortex?! Watch the Can Fan arm wrestle with one and you'll see:yoinks:......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYbLub3Iw2c

Tip:Check Ebay for the cheapest price on Elicent
Hope this answers your Q's.

Grow on!

Hola' guys!
thanks for the quick replies
and special thanks to herb for answering all my Qs. :tiphat:

I was biased toward the elicent from the begining and if it will pull
two 1kw lights then I'm going for it!
the ones I'm looking at are on the Bay and it seems like a good price.
the guy selling the elicent and the vortex said the elicent is the quietest and thats one of the requisites for my choosing also!
and that utube video sez alot too.

I ended up using a vortex and a hooked it up to a variable speed dial to control the fan speed. Nice to have the higher cfm if needed, when it isn't, just dial it down.

My 2 cents.

Would you return a Can-Fan to switch to Elicent?....you've got me wondering....

i love my hurricane..... I remember there are 2 different motors or models that are 6", the more powerful one is almost as powerful as the 8" (i think its the same motor, just smaller housing and holes) but much cheaper. I have a standard hardware store ceiling fan dimmer switch on it, and have used it for 1k,2k hps, as well as 4x 600w. Rated for continuous industrial use (on for months at a time) in 100% humidity.

I run a 6" can fan (valueline) I have it running in my vertical room pulling through 2 cool tubes cooling 2 1000 watt bulbs. I can safely say there is little to no motor noise, and little to no vibration of the fan itself. for the 80 bucks I spent its perfect.
