It also depends on whether or not you are trying to get a complex taste out of your buds. If you have a 1000w within a foot you are going to really restrict the types of flavors that can develop. Both DJ Short and The Rev suggest keeping lights 2 - 3 feet away from the top of your canopy. There is a small decrease in yield, but the increase in taste is supposed to be dramatic.

I'm trying that this round instead of trying to keep the light as close as possible. I'm a medical patient growing for myself, I want the highest quality over quantity.

its the heat more than anything that will damage your plant so i would have a fan blowing at the reflector, and have it ~10 inchs from your plants. from my own experience anything above 90F is bad.

I have a buddy that grows outside and the summer temps get well over 107~f and by the end of summer he has 12ft x 8ft round plants. Just add water if it starts getting really warm, but at the same time i never get my room over 84~f i'm just sayin that the heat is not a total killer, just make sure there not thursty.
