1985 Toyota pickup

I recently got into Toyota pickups. I did a complete rebuild on a 22r and basically can replace any part of the truck. Let me tell you why i think the 1985 is the perfect year for the toyota. It was the last year of the solid straight axle, the straight axle is easy to put a lift kit on, probably gets a little worse gas mileage but defiantly A LOT less liable to break when your wheeling the dog piss out of it. In 1986 they switched to the independent front suspension/torsion bar setup which can still be wheeled, i've seen it done, but have fun fixing your front end when it breaks. Second reason is of course is the extended cab option and the Electronic Fuel Injection options which came around in 84. The EFI makes them much more reliable on longer trips and helps gas mileage also. Not until you've taken a yota through a mud pit will you be surprised how much of a beating these things can take and just keep going. Lots of country's used these things as military vehicle and i can see why. Just thought i'd see if there is any other yota enthusiasts out there.

got a stocker right now, love the thing a lot. got it torn down to the timing chain in the garage right now. after that i expect another 100k on the engine at least.

gettin 20mpg in a 85 4x4. i love it

wasnt the big thing with the 85's the 22re? i believe that yota gave the 22r fuel injection that year hence the re. another little fact, straight axles were only offered part of 85, that was the transition year to IFS. Its still a common swap to drop a straight axle into a newer rig, its pretty straightforward, the frames didnt change a whole lot if i understand correctly.
I love my yota even if its an 04',I have the pre runner which is 2wd but has full skidplates and an electric locker in the rear. For wheelin' Im a jeep guy,shit, Im only 3 hours from the 'con.

another big bonus for the toyota's is that most aftermarket parts are produced here in the states

toyota hilux, born in japan, raised in America!

I have a 93 FZJ80 Landcruiser.

For what I do, it's as close to the perfect vehicle ever manufactured. They would have been better served with a more powerful motor but you gotta love factory lockers and solid axles with coil suspension.

you don't need power when all the jeeps are stuck behind you :)

hey there. i used to have a '85 4x4 Pickup. the solid axle is nice but if you are planning on fixing it up you are going to need to pick up a 86+ steering box and a high steer kit anyway. i don't think you end up saving that much $ on the 85 vs. doing a SAS on a 86+ vehicle.

btw, ifs = it fuckin sucks. not independent front suspension :)
