Best FFOF Mix?

Member
Hey guys,
I bought around 5 bags of FFOF for my grow (have a max of 15 plants in my tent) and a bag of light warrior for my seedlings. What would be the best mix to have for each stage of growth?

Are there any additives that I REALLY need?
Dolomite lime? - I've seen some ppl say this is really necessary and others say its not needed.
Perlite - Should I get some? It has a little in it but is it enough for good drainage?
Coir or anything else for more aeration?
Anything else?
Also what ratio's should I use for additives

I'll be growing in 3 or 5 gallon grow bags.

Thanks guys!

I like it to use it unamended. They design FFOF to be good to go right out of the bag.

Perlite is the only thing I would definately suggest. FFOF comes out of the bag kind of heavy and needs something to lighten it up imo.

FF Happy Frog on the other hand is better if your plan is to use straight outta the bag. Its pretty much OF just lighter. However, I would still add some perlite to the soil as well as a little EWC and kelp meal.

I have to agree 100%. No other amenities. No dolomite lime with FFOF. It isn't really said here, but I did find someone saying on the forums something like "if you added dolomite lime to FFOF, and you are using tap water that's higher than 7, you're gonna have major issues" **EDIT** I speak from personal experience, dolomite + ffof = unhappy plants about a month in.

I'd love to give credit to who said it, but I forget where it was said (there are so many threads and so many pages to look through for one little phrase :p)

Perlite + FFOF = good to go. Cheers:dance013:

I've had kick ass results with fox farm 3 part mix

1 bag light warrior - for coir
1 bag ocean forest
1 bag planting mix - for peat
8 tablespoons dolomite lime - this is a must for pH regulation
No extra perlite needed

its as easy as 1, 2 ,3 and is great for all life stages from seedling to harvest. And it pretty much has everything you could want in a soil, from bacteria,to guano , cocoa, peat and humas and everything inbetween. Plants need little more than the occassional tea with this mix, very user friendly and requires no pH if using organic nutes.

I've tried a few different mixes of FF products over the years from ocean forest by itself, to LW/OF mix, this by far is much eaier to use and gives way better results.

Like you, I have tried many different combinations of FF soils and LW/OF mix seems to do the best... with FF Happy Frog right behind. Will have to search for the ingredients of FFHF but it is basically just a LW/OF mix and is cheaper.

There was a great side by side comparison of the OF and HF done by sqwirl. A lot of pertinent info.

FFOF is suppose to be good right out of the bag, but over the last 4 or 5 months i have been very unhappy with fox farm. i now have soil aphids, which i got form FFOF. i am always getting old roots and big sticks. a month ago i opened a bag that had mold in it. i am about to make a change and would recommend you do the same. i am not sure if this is true but i was told that the fox farm on the east coast is not even the same as what you buy in cali. i was told that fox farm is letting some company in north carolina bag it and take care of sales on the east coast. hope this helps

FFOF is a little hot in the nute dept for my blood, I usually cut it 1/2 and 1/2 with compost or Happy Frog, and add perlite, bone meal, etc as needed.

Lime is a good idea in any peaty soil (that shit is acid), but dolomite lime always takes effect too slowly for me. Try hydrated lime for faster action, just remember that it washes out and will need to be replaced in a couple months.

Perlite is good for drainage if your soil retains water by itself just fine, if your soil tends to be too dry go with vermiculite. If you have none of these problems don't bother with either. You can top dress with additives later depending on your nute regimen, but I generally start with the above.

half bail promix bx
1 bag ffof
1 cup dolomite lime
1 cup blood meal
1 cup bone meal
10-20% extra perlite

this mix will take you through veg all the way to chop with nothing but watering.

It has been confirmed (by a FF rep) that FF uses recycled soil. Also if you just look at soil from 6+ months ago it has a much darker and richer look to it. This doesn't even account for the plethora of anecdotal evidence where people get aphids, gnats or fungal infestations because of FFOF. The soil quality has dropped and the east coast most certainly DOES have a DIFFERENT source than the west coast for FFOF.

the only thing i have had from any soil out here is fungus gnats. they are a fact of life. some ground up mosquito dunks make short work of them. as far as ffof on the east coast... i love it ;)

Wow so many conflicting answers here...
I'm from the Indiana,Michigan, Ohio area. Will FFOF be alright?
Also it looks like perlite would be a good idea..
Some others say dolomite is but others say its a bad idea. Come on guys! haha

I'm using the FF line of nutes - Big bloom, Tiger Bloom and Grow Big.

i live in the same area and i can tell you the ffof sucks around here. it was great but the last 4 or 5 months it has gone down hill.

It seems hit or miss with the FFOF. If you are getting good bags or are happy with it by all means continue using it. However many people are not getting good product and it has been confirmed they recycle so...IMO is it worth it to spend 12-22 dollars on a bag of premo soil that might not be premo? haha

Once my seedlings grow for about 2 weeks, I put them right into FFOF and add nothing at all and I've been growing them for about 80 days and still haven't nuted. I've only added water and the are very healthy. pH all your water to 6.8 and you'll be fine. Here's some pics:
