Alternative Election Night

I'm hoping for a hung parliament and it looks like we might get one. We really need electoral reform, and if labour need the lib dems to prop them up, we'll get it. The Tories seem to think it's going that way, because George Osbourne is already bleating about how unfair it is going to be.

bad day for conservitive,,,,,,!!!

loads of voats have come in and Labour is holding 13,,,,,,,,,Conservitive:: 5,,,,,,,,,, LIBdem::1

This is actually thoroughly exciting. I've got a long working day tomorrow - starting at 9am - and I'm here watching the news broadcast on the BBC.

Anybody seen the video of the BNP's Bob Bailey getting into a punch up today?

Edit: Oh yeah, and I voted for the Lib Dems. If Labour stay in, it won't be so bad though. Gordon Brown knows what he's doing when it comes to the economy. I don't like the Conservatives at all.

I stayed up long enough to see Jacqui Smith get handed her P45 by the voters, and to see my own constituency result (Tory, as expected), then toddled off to bed for a whole 90 minutes.

Glad to see the Greenies finally get a seat, though.

Now the horse trading begins.....

It's a really bad day for the Tories. Twelve months ago they were looking at winning an overwhelming majority. After twelve months of campaigning and a fortuitous collapse of the economy that really should have worked in their favour, they are actually looking at the realistic possibility of remaining in opposition. After living through the Thatcher years, it's difficult not to take some delight in this.

From my perspective it couldn't have gone better.

Eventually the LDs are going to reject Cameron's offer because the tories are not going to agree to the kind of electoral reform they want. Then we'll get a short lived Lib-Lab government just staying around long enough to introduce PR.

Then we'll have an end to any party getting much less than half the vote and still having an overwhelming majority.

Our political system is deeply unfair and needs to be changed. We can't keep this system were a minority are regularly given absolute control.

I don't want any more Gordon Brown's, Tony Blair's or Margaret Thatchers who even ignore their own parties and make outrageous decisions and never get held accountable.

We don't have a presidential system, but PMs with large majorities effectively end up with presidential power.

I want a system were the only way that people retain power is by negotiating between parties and having to maintain coalitions.

This should help keep the worst excesses of all the parties in check.

I also like the idea of the people being able to call for a vote of no confidence in an MP and force a by-election. That was something that was sorely needed during the expenses scandal.

I'm really surprised at how few seats the Liberal Democrats got. I guess all the commotion about Clegg's performance in the debates only served to limit the damage that the Conservative campaign caused.

Such is the nature of first-past-the-post.

650 seats.

Labour - 29% of vote, gets 39% of the seats (258)
Conservative - 36% of vote, gets 47% of seats (307)
LibDem - 23% of vote, gets 8% of seats (57)

Unless your vote is concentrated in geographic areas, you're screwed....it's entirely possible to get 50% of the vote and 0% of the seats.

I wouldn't give up hope yet. He said before the election, that if there was a hung parliament he would deal with the party with the most seats first. He has to spend time at least considering Cameron's deal. The thing is that Cameron is not able to give Clegg two of his core policies, electoral reform and and greater involvement in the EU. There's no way his party would support him if he did.

By the beginning of next week Clegg will be able to say "we gave it a try" now we'll talk to labour.

The fact is that the Lib-dems are much closer to labour in terms of policies than they are to the tories.

Remember that nobody, even the party leaders, is quite sure how this is going to play out as we've not had a hung parliament for decades.

It's going to take time.
