Easiest way to sterilize/clean a room

C

Casual

Hey all... I'd searched for an answer to this, but didn't come up with anything solid.
I have my grow room completely cleared out and need to clean/sterilize it now before moving the buckets, rez, etc back in for final setup before growing.
I'd thought of bleach water in a spray bottle, H2O2 in a spray bottle, etc... I know there are other products out there, but would like to know if there's something available at the local store I can use without having to order it.
I still have a mommy tent in the room, but am going to move it out, as I don't know what affect the bleach fumes might have on her.

ANY info would be great!!!

Thanks

Marry a clean freak, or a meth addict!

Everything i know about bleach tells me it does nothing to sterlize it just whitens!
Vinegar and Soap water will clean it and then a Spray down of peroxide will disinfect.

Maybe even a 3rd wash with fungacide.

Good luck.

gotta agree bleach and water has always worked,
some times i know of people who clean this way and then leave a bowl with bleach in it for a day or two out in the room

Argg... thought of that... I have propane burner!! ;)

Well, My wife went in with a bucket and scrubber and did the shelves in the room, walls, doors, etc in Bleach Water. I sprayed the ceilings, cracks and crevices, etc.
Once the room airs out a bit, we'll go back in and do the floor.
Then tomorrow after it's had some time to dry out, I'll hang the Panda Plastic, and I'm going to run a sheet on the floor, about 5" up the walls to make a catch tray if I wind up with a leak at some point. I'm in a VERY dry environment... Humidity in the room is almost never more than 25%, and has been under 20% for the past week. I have the blower fan in there running now to move the air and help with drying.
Good advice all, thank you!

Home de Pot sells plastic 4-5 gal pump sprayers, they work wonders for complety saturating the walls in a bleach mist. Then scrub the walls with sponges, I like to use the green tough ones. You can rinse out that pump and put straight water to rinse the bleach/dirt/bacteria off the walls/ceiling and use a shopvac and mop to cleanthings up. If you have carpet then you'll want to rent a steam cleaning vacuum (or buy one, great for when people spill shit on the carpets)

Home depot also sells full-face respirators which would be a good idea to have

Bleach Water @ 10% or more

Bleach Water @ 10% or more

Bleach water at a concentration of at least 10% is significant for sterilizing...so said my professor of my current horticulture class. :)

Ok heres a tip on cleaning out your room, take everything out clean it out, then sublimate dry ice in your room sealed off. This will cool your room and take out any bugs with cO2 gas

I heard from someone who works with children that for it to be considered sanitized you have to spray bleach on a surface after cleaning and not wipe it. Seemed kind of weird..... wonder if that's a food service thing?

Anyways, for cleaning I suggest you buy one of those cheap tyvek suits....... the more covered up you are...... the more likely you'll do a better job cleaning......

When I'm wearing rubber gloves I dig right in a clean the toilet.... without gloves.... well that somethin else :D

Bad info. Bleach does sterilize

Here is what I did after a hermi problem that left me uneasy about residual pollen.

I mixed up about a 25% bleach solution in a 2 gallon pump sprayer. I then sprayed everything down saturating the walls, ceiling, floor. I then took a rag and wiped everything down. I then mixed up about a 10% solution of peroxide (swimming pool Baquacil is 27% H2O2) in the pump sprayer and proceeded to saturate everything again.

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) neutralizes Bleach (NaOCL) via:

NaOCL + H2O2 -> H2O + NaCl + O2

This totally sterilized my room and then removed any residual bleach.

I wiped everything down again with plain water.

Short of the flame thrower I feel this is the next best overkill available to you.

Killing microbes and bugs is two different matters. For the bugs I like to soak the room down in strong concentration of 100% Neem Oil+soap. Microbes I don't really worry about, but if you need to sanitize for some reason you can use bleach and vinegar. (Or if you are a brewer why not use Star San or Iodophor.) Apparently bleach on its own is not that great. In this audio interview on sanitizing for homebrew, Charlie Talley from Five Star Chemicals explains that if you mix el cheapo bleach with vinegar, it can become an acceptable no-rinse sanitizer. I imagine if you adjust upward it would become a disinfectant or even a sterilizing agent (probably dangerous).

"Room temp water, 1oz bleach (not clorox, use no-name brand) and 1oz white vinegar in 5 gallons of water. Add to the water separately or you can gas yourself. At this concentration it is effective in 30 seconds of contact and can be used as a no rinse sanitizer."

Has anyone used any of the clorox natural disinfectant cleaner? I have been using that and it seems to be working pretty well.
