Getting a medical MJ card in UK

I suffer from depression, chronic anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and cardio vascular problems, my medical file is 5 inches thick.

There is no point asking for recommendation from my doctor, for she

1. Doesnt know anything about weed.
2. Wont give me a recommendation.

I am thinking of writing a letter myself actually. Any ideas where should i send it to?

I remember reading a while ago you can ask for permission from a "secretary of state"?

"Under the UK Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, Section 6 , it is an offence to cultivate any plant of the Cannabis genus in the UK without dispensation / licence from the Secretary of State."

So the secretary is the person i am interested in contacting here?

I dont know much about medical MJ lisencing in UK, is it easy to get as in CA?

Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated

From reading that governement response it looks like it's your GP you need to be talking to. If your GP won't help, change your GP.

There is a guy in N.London who will supply you all you want, as long as you fill in his form, and a doctor sign it, you have to have a consultation and pay £10 (it may have risen?) then you can buy 1/4 oz's of a few strains, it's the only place I know of in England you can do this.

Simple answer - there is no medical necessity defence in British law.

Edwin Stratton currently has an appeal underway challenging the law, but even his defence is based on the fact that the Misuse of Drugs Act is arbitrary, rather than a medical defence per se.

AFAIK, the only licences that have been granted are for research purposes and for GW Pharma to make and export Sativex.

Your GP cannot give you a prescription or recommendation for cannabis.

Edit: Didn't see Hazy Lady's post above....but that's the first I have heard of it...

'Secretary of State' is a term used in UK legislation to refer to various government ministers who head a government department. As far as I know the department that could in theory issue a license to grow (and by implication possess) is the Home Office, headed by the Home Secretary who in the current governbent is a class A twat called Alec Johnson. In reality there is currently no chance at all to get a license, but who knows it may be all change after our general election next week. (OK I'm being very optimistic , but if the right party gets at least some power we could potentially see percy growers eventually getting tolerated). Or just maybe Eddie will win his case......

I was told today that Eddie has to actually lose his case, then appeal in order to set any kind of precedent. I presume this is due to the fact that the appeal will be set in the High Court. If he wins in the lower courts and his case is dismissed, no precedent can be set.

I've thought about the situation here in the UK a lot. Growing in the UK is dealt with as if it were a 'criminal' activity, except no 'crime' has ever been committed... meaning no loss, injury or fraud. GW have a 'license' to grow weed... how can you obtain a license to commit a 'criminal' activity? Well the truth is you can't... growing in the UK must be a lawful activity for you to be able to obtain a license to do it... in the same way you do to drive. Any action that you can obtain license to perform must be deemed a lawful action. So really all we are looking at here is engaging in unlicensed activity, and if your grow is non-commercial... how does anyone really have the right to say you can't do it? Well, it turns out they don't but you just need to know how to deal with them correctly.

[Anyone have an idea what sort of strains they are working with there at GW?]

Yep freeman.....he pleaded not guilty at Crown Court, but basically asked the jury to find him guilty which they did a couple of days ago. He gets sentenced end of May and has got 28 days to get his appeal in to go to the Court of Appeal. The man's a saint.

Sativex is available on prescription in the UK,, but the majority of people that have taken Sativex said that it didnt really help their condition. Plus its bloody expensive!!

Hope this helps

Legend! Have we got a thread for Eddie's progress here? If not it may be worth starting one so we can all see how he's getting on.

As far as I'm aware they are the only organisation growing cannabis in the UK 'legally' under license... although I'm sure there must be others and it just hasn't gone public.

I think we can all agree that Sativex is a step backwards from growing a strain that works for you and firing up a fat joint/bowl. Extractions, oils and edibles are all within the capability of the patient too if something stronger is needed. Sativex would be laughed off the face of the earth if restrictions on our righteous herb were lifted. Maybe we'll see the day... I'm not holding by breath.

There's a ongoing thread over at Uk420 in the Activism section where Eddie posts....or look here....

Industrial hemp growers all grow under license.....as does the Eden project down in Cornwall (i think theirs is low THC hemp too). The Duchess of Northumberland has got a licence and a few canna specimens locked up in a cage in her 'Poisonous Plants Garden'. Apparently the Canna is locked away, but you can pick the super toxic mandrake or belladonna as you walk around the place FFS.

The Garden features many plants grown unwittingly in back gardens, and those that grow in the British countryside, as well as many more unusual varieties. Flame-shaped beds contain belladonna, tobacco and mandrake. The Alnwick Garden has a Home Office licence to grow some very special plants; the cannabis and coca which are found behind bars in giant cages.

Thanks for the links guys, the Duchess's garden totally slipped my mind and I'd not heard that EDEN were growing too. I wonder if you can do a freedom of information request to the home office regarding licenses. They may not disclose data protected information on who is growing, but we may be able to find out some other bits of info such as how many licenses have been issued and when etc.

Sorry where was it I said it was legal?
For very obvious reasons I am not going to give you my details but I can assure you it is still open, has been since '92 though the MJ side has been open less, but still about 10 years now.

"The next week and by chance, David Hadorn arrived in town and we paid a visit to Tony's Herbal Corner to in King’s Cross. The shop itself does a good trade selling health foods, with the medical marijuana dispensary tucked away down a side street and upstairs. A video camera on the door means only members can get in. The menu offered a couple of Dutch skunks, outdoor Swiss sativa, Thai, Swazi, plus Afghan and Maroccan hash. There is a great THC balm to soothe your aches and pains away, and a rooftop ganga garden in full view of nearby offices which was truly a delight to behold. It appears this medical marijuana supply operation is being left alone by police. Tony even had six boxes of Swiss marijuana delivered to him after customs had initially stopped it. Again, this is not "blatant open" dealing that the police say they cannot tolerate; it is a medical marijuana dispensary that they can tolerate".

This is a typical post, this was from here :- http://www.norml.org.nz/article270.html
