You replace the missing minerals with your nutes of choice, think of DI water as a blank piece of paper, its up to you to decide what goes in it.

that is the consumer reports best buy. I know it had a decent flow rating and other tested functions.

I don't think I would trust a 60 dollar set up untested what if filters are really pricey with the cheap one?

I just picked up one of these setups from my local Lowe's. It's currently on an "in-store only" special price of $147. (EDIT: Ooops, they've updated the online price to $147 too). I also grabbed a set of replacement filters and membrane ($80 total). It seems like a perfect solution for those of us that only need a few gallons a day and can supplement with decent quality tap water. I won't have to buy much bottled spring water anymore either!

Install was pretty easy too.

Btw, Lowe's carries the Whirlpool brand. Home Depot carries the same setup but GE labeled...and $100+ more expensive!

I use this unit here. It is rated at 100 GPD at 50 psi and 50 degrees
F. Mine fills my 32 gallon trashcan in about 10 hours with the water
at 40psi and 65F. So I guess it flows about 77 GPD. It's well built
and it works. My ppm is under 5. Hope this helps.

I got a 100gpd one off Ebay a month or so ago and am very happy with it. It has a very fast flow rate and easy filter replacements. My tap water is about 500ppm and it brings it down to between 0-10ppm. I think I will be going with filters from ebay from now on.

RO'd water is also known as "dead" water. If you are using RO water...it should come out at 7.0 PH and 0.0 - 0.05 TDS, depending on how good a set-up you have. DI is not necessary for "our" purposes...this is more relevant to those that have aquariums.

That is also why CalMag is important when using RO'd water, as most nutes don't have enough to make up for what has been stripped out of the water in it's "natural" state. With my 55 gal res, I use a cup of CalMag every change....
