whats make a strain elite or not elite ?
to me Elite is a very rare and very hard to find genetics,
genetics that may only be in the hands of very few people,
strains that cant compare to any other strains when compared side by side in growth, smell, resin, taste, etc.
would this be a correct or is elite something in the mind of the beholder..?

lets discuss

Hype and limited availability. If it's hyped enough, and very hard to get, it's an automatic "elite".

Occasionally a sport will appear in some standard seedbank seeds, it gets cloned, and an "elite" is born.

Sad that some supposed "elites" are just bagseed. They get hyped, a few clones get around, and poof, another "elite" is born.

It all started as bagseed.

so for the most part im correct only i forgot to mention the hoarding part. lol

welderdan: you say its all started from bagseed..i do think even certain phenos of certain strains are elite so it has little to do with bagseed.

SWC: maybe chime in here?

I disagree with the bagseed thing, I know several breeders and the amount of work and time that goes into finding one stable good pheno is staggering.

I usually run restricted fire cuts from friends and breeders, things I cannot resell or hand out. That way only 2-3 people are growing a strain and we can corner the market on it. It's just a marketing ploy, but it usually works.

you can find your own elite just grow enough seeds out and you will find a jewel .it is all in the pheno hunt .i found one but did not clone it .i will never make that mistake again it was from a pack of gno3 c99. just grow out lots of seeds

YES its all in the selection. I have had a few that would be considered Elite. The more plants you grow the better your chances you will find a special plant.

Chemdawg was found in bagseed.

Really it depends on the grower. If you know what your doing you can grow out mexican bagseed and make it look dank.

Yes some strains are much better than others .

Northern lights is a great example. if you get a good nl mom and know how to grow it then it will be as dank as some chem dawg for sure.

back in the day i had a true clone of stella blue.

it was a very unique strain in smell and taste. it was not the best yeilder but for bag appeal and flavor it was unmatched.

its been 3 years since i lost it and have not smoked it or its like since.

that kind of sums up elite to me

Heh, you guys misunderstand me. When I say it all started as bagseed, I meant that EVERY strain was at one time bagseed. Colombian Gold? Bagseed. Afgani? Bagseed. All the Polyhybrids? All the parents started as bagseed. Haze? Combination of bagseed strains.

I'm not saying all elites originated as bagseed, I'm saying all commercial pot available nowadays has its roots in bagseed.

I've been growing bagseed since 1976

I would say thats relatively untrue. While it may be true in alot of cases certainly not every commercial strain of pot today came from commerical seeds taken from commerical weed.

Gypsy travels the world in search for genetics... Ghsco does as well check out the front page for info on gypsy's travels great stories.. These are far from the only companies or people that have gone out into the 'field' to aquire and preserve these genetics.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, : an elite to me is something that i smoke than can still taste 30 mins later with a potent high, regardless of how it grows.

Who said it has to be commercial weed? You can buy a bag of some high dollar stuff, find three or four seeds, and find an "elite"

C99 and Chem come to mind.

People go far and wide to find new/different weed, yes that is true. They also buy it from somebody. Be it some old guy in Thailand or Morocco, you find some unique weed, buy a bag or some seeds, and there you are. It's still bagseed when you get down to it.

I see a lot of people saying an Elite strain means a strain that is hard to find, or limited, but to me that has nothing at all to do with a strains status as elite.

Would an Elite cut of Sour Diesel that is suddenly widely distributed no longer be considered elite? Of course it would!

Elite genetics are SUPERIOR genetics, superior in every/any way to other genetic expressions of the same "Strain".
