has anyone ever used the happy frog dry ferts. they have a few different types with each one containing humic acids and mycorrhizae ,they also use alfalfa meal, kelp meal, hydrolyzed fish, and many other natrural and organic amendments.cost was 10-12$ for 4 lbs.they also have a recipe for a super tea in instructions for use.seems like some pretty resonable stuff was wandering if anyone has any feedback.

I have used the Phos. bat guano mix in the past, only because I couldn't get my regular brand fast enough. No problems with it. Seems a bit expensive for that tiny amount....YMMV
Sort of cool it comes with mycorrhizae.
You can build your own mix of that type easily.

Its the same stuff FoxFarm used to sell as "Piece Of Mind" in the cardboard box. Its pretty good stuff. I've used both "Happy Frog" and "Piece Of Mind" for years for cannabis, vegetables and even strawberries. It may have too many animal products in it to use in the woods on a guerilla grow as animals may be attracted to the smell of it. Other than that it works well. I also like the "Down To Earth" brand products. Their "Bio Live" is similar and I kind of like it better than the FoxFarm products. All are good.

I don't think the info above is correct... Fox Farm continues to make both Peace of Mind and Happy Frog ferts and they are different. I am pretty sure of this, but not positive. I've used the two "brands" interchangably but I do believe the POM is higher quality, better ingredients, maybe more guano and less poultry compost, or something like that, plus more myc and beneficials.

I could be totally wrong about all of that LOL But I have a feeling that's right.

(Sorry, I'm baked and shouldn't be posting tonight. :artist:)

The ingredients, NPK, and price are all the same. They even use the same names for the different NPKs. I have used the "Tomato and Vegetable", "All Purpose", and "Acid Loving Plants" of both Happy Frog and Piece of Mind for years. They have all the benificials listed on the side of the box of POM and on the back of the bag of HF. I too like the POM a little better, not because I believe its different, but because I would rather buy a product in a cardboard box vs a plastic bag. I think the Happy Frog gets more attention as so many kids are getting into gardening now that growing cannabis is the in thing. Those bright colored packages go a long way at todays hydro shop. Catchy name as well, and that damn frog is just so cute! Kids in the candy store (I mean hydro store)just can't stay away from all those bright colored packages and catchy named products that line the shelves.

At one point in time, the POM line was going to be limited to mainstream garden centers/nurseries. No 'stoner graphics' and such. At that point in time, the POM line did NOT contain mycorrhizal fungi.

Then FF revamped their 'Happy Frog' line with the 'stoner graphics' for the indoor garden operations. The Happy Frog product line did include the fungi.

Since both products are packed at the same facility, keeping the very same mixtures (except for the fungi) was probably more effort than necessary. So about 18 months or so back the POM line also included the mycorrhizal stuff.

I first bought Piece Of Mind three or four years ago and I was pretty sure it had the words "With Mycorrizae and Humic Acid" on the box. But I trust CC as he seems to be one of the most knowledgeable members of this site. I always trust his posts.

Hey Clackamas, what do you think of the Down To Earth brand products? I believe they are made in your neck of the woods. They are one of my favorite brands of dry fertilizer blends and single ingredients. They are a little harder to find around here than other brands and seem a little overpriced ($20 a box for Bio Live,Alfalfa meal,Kelp meal) but I really like them.

I'm very familiar with Down-To-Earth (DTE) and they have a very fine line of products. A bit overpriced perhaps but they use top-quality ingredients imported by Wilbur-Ellis which pretty much controls the Western USA in the area of dry fertilizers. Beyond huge - their gross revenues are in the hundreds of millions and not just fertilizers. Things like livestock medicine, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, et al.

Meaning that the kelp meal from DTE is the same exact product packed under the Neptune's Harvest label. Same plant. Same everything.

If it were me and I had to pay $20.00 per box of a mix from DTE, I'd be looking for another source like the organic line from E. B. Stone - they also source their base ingredients through Wilbur-Ellis.

Dr. Earth is another viable product line and there are probably any number of other brands that are regional. One that comes to mind is Rabbit Hill out of Texas (I think) - they have a great product line as well.

Don't get too hung-up on a label on the box/sack. The main thing is to buy organic amendments (non-GMO) and this is especially true of alfalfa meal. Farm stores, feed stores, some landscape companies, etc. are viable sources to contact and see what they can provide.

In the long run you'll save a ton of money. My fertilizer mix which is far, far better than anything out of FF, DTE, et al. cost me about $.70 per lb. and that's only because I have to pay almost $2.00 per lb. for neem seed meal. If I didn't include that item the price would hover around $.60 per lb.

Let me give you a better illustration. The company Mycorrhizal Applications out of Grants Pass, Oregon is one of the leading suppliers of mycorrhizal fungi.

Their products are sold by Fungi Perfecti by the ounce. Fair enough.

Their products are also used by the companies listed here so that if you're on a thread where 2 boneheads are arguing over which is better - Fungi Perfecti vs. Roots Organic vs. et al. you can at least get a chuckle or two.

BTW - Fungi Perfecti charges around $5.00 per ounce ($80.00 per lb.) - the wholesale price for the high-end micronized version is between $16.00 - $20.00 per lb. Far, far less if you buy a master pack which is 20 lbs.

Just a thought.

I am pretty sure of the same. I used POM back in 2006.

But man, Coot, you know yer shit! So I ain't about to challenge it.

Thanks as always for the great info.

A few years back I saw a TV program I believe on History Channel and it had similar info about mycorrhizae. They toured a large factory that produced the mycorrhizae for many different companies. They said they were one of the only producers in the country and that almost everybody purchased their supplies from them.

Heh................

I may have it backwards then. What I am very clear on was that at a trade show a couple of years back, Fox Farms had a small(ish) booth offering their product lines to retailers and they had all of them available to look at.

One of the high points was that either Happy Frog or POM now had mycorrhizal fungi to make them identical other than pack size.

They're using the best fungi out there so kudos to FF for that.
