Smell of amonia on some bud?

Some of my stash has a faint smell of ammonia. I recently tried to refresh it by adding a lemon peel and left it in the jar for 12-16 hours. I opened the jar a couple days ago and there is a lingering smell of ammonia. Anyone know if that is a sign of mold or something else?

Thanks.

It is a sign of fermentation I think, many bricked imports smelled of ammonia/cat piss as they had been slowly fermenting while stored and shipped.

Mould smells, well, mouldy. How old is the ammonia smelling stash?

I'd take it out of the jars, lay it on some newspaper overnight and examine it closely for any mould or other suspicious signs.

It is a couple months old and has been kept in a glass jar. Do you have any idea if this is dangerous or if there is a way to stop it from continuing this progression?

I doubt it's dangerous, I am many others smoked tonnes of ammonia smelling import brick back in the day.

What strain is it? Might be a natural odour coming out during cure, there is a strain called CatPiss and Trainwreck can smell of catpiss too.

It's not fermenting

It's not fermenting

The ammonia smell is a very good thing. It means bud is curing nicely. No need for the lemon peel. It will cure the ammonia smell will be gone and you will enjoy will cured reefer. No more lemon peel. :smokeit:

Open it to the air for a few minutes every day - it needs a hair more drying, that's all.

Thanks all. I did let it sit out overnight to dry more and the smell of ammonia is probably has not increased, probably a little less than it was. Yeah, I think it was still drying when I got it and sealing it in a jar without burping is probably the issue.

It's Lavender Kush by the way. :)

This happened to some bud I was curing myself. I forgot to burp the jar around a week after putting it in there for a couple days. I opened the jars up and thought it was ruined... so I laid it out over night and then it was crispy bone dry... over-dry actually.

Maybe Hank Hemp is right. Although... I have had plenty of excellent cures where I never smelled any ammonia.

Ammonia smell is not a bad thing. Just curing good for you.

Sorry but I have to correct you. When you smell ammonia on bud that means it's the start of decomposition. It means your bud is about to start rotting probably because of too much moisture.
Airing out your jars could help if it's not too late.

I've NEVER had curing reefer go bad after getting the ammonia smell. If the bud is to wet I've never had it start to smell like ammonia. Sorry to disagree but that has been my experience curing reefer lo these many years.

No maybe about it.

All off my best cures I got the ammonia smell, you don't have to get it everytime and when you do check to see if it wet or to damp just set it out for a little bit not over night is usually too long ask Mr Bom. Too wet for to long you could get mold so watch out. please not the cred I've gotten from others who agree with me.

Back in the early 90's when living in DC I'd get kilo bricks of herb that had a bladder of ammonia wrapped around it.. If not correctly opened you had some nasty smelln herb...lol

Back around 86 I picked up an OZ. of really wet, blackish green colored herb that reeked of ammonia. Too wet to roll but two bong rips had me high as a kite. Wish I knew what it was or what was done to it. Some of the most potent herb I ever smoked.

as we cannot yet attend @ Canna U to find out for sure, so to me it seems a good rule of thumb to never be 100% on anything

keep this discussion brewing crew, I never had that smell but I may one day and it would be good to hear a few more voices chime in, has anyone done a thread search yet?

K+ to meaningful dialogues :)

Some of my good smelling stuff started smelling like ammonia, when I put it under a microscope the ammonia smelling herb was developing white spiderweb type mold. Cut out the mold, dried out the herb better and the ammonia smell went away. If your pot didn't start out smelling like ammonia, but later started developing the ammonia smell, I believe it is mold causing the smell.

The only time I have smelled ammonia is from bricks like said above.

They actually spray the buds down before compacting them with a bottle-jack. The guy in Galeana, Mexico I saw do this used water from a big tub that they would rinse the plants off in to get rid of any bugs. It smelled like ammonia.

I always thought it was a fermentation smell until I witnessed this in the late 90's.

I have never had an ammonia smell from my jars unless I put them in too wet.

Mold Smell=Dirt Smell?

It's been my experience that mold has more of a dirt smell. While I can't say what causes the ammonia smell for certain but I believe it is caused by the bud decomposing while still a bit to wet. It's a fine line between getting mold and a perfect cure. I usually let mine dry a bit long hung and not risk mold in the jars. I hate dirt weed that's why I grow my own.
