Morel season!

Hopefully I'll have enough time this year to go out and snag some. Should be a stellar year. My all time favorite but have yet to try some matsutake! Met someone recently who knows of a matsutake patch on private land so hopefully a feast later this year.

I hope it is a good year. Last year we found several, and have remembered the spot. We even left a couple out so that the spores would spread. Erratic temperatures from hot to very cold are dampening the season, and not enough rain!!

My family has gone to the same spot every year for about 25 years. Really odd how they grow in patches reliably. Havent had the right weather round my part yet though. Slice in half, soak in salt water overnight, toss in some flour and fry in a cast iron shillet. One of the greatest treats youll ever have the privalidge of tasting. A side of trout or large mouth bass makes it even better. better stop as im starting to drool. lol.

A small flush a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. The quality was OK but very sparse. Went out today and found a nice patch, see above, pretty close to the previous one. We had some snow, rain and cool weather and this batch is perfect! About 2 lbs, including a few others I found later in the day, and all going into the frying pan tonight. Took me about an hour. I got my spring morel fix satisfied for sure!

Ended up bringing most of em to my favorite local restaurant and giving them to the 'kitchen' to enjoy. Walked back in later and they were all smiles...heh heh. Nice to spread some love! The chef cooked some up for me in a nice light red wine sauce and crostini...:yummy:

Till next year for the morels...next up some King Boletes!

I got to get out before it's too late. Haven't morel hunted in years, but know a few good spots.

I frequent there regularly, live in a small town, they know me by name. The crew takes good care of me so kicked them back a little something. Funny thing is they sent a plate out, off the menu, to one of their 'special' customers with guests and they raved about it...LOL. My shrooms and the chefs skills. I walked by that table and had a good chuckle.

More rain, snow and cool weather and they flushed again! My little patch has been pretty productive this year. Found a few more lbs and the restaurant made me a one-off pizza smothered in morels :)

Are they in central ny?What am I lookin for?I want some!!
See my pic above. Out in Cali they grow in areas where the soil has been disturbed, like logging, or burned from a fire. They show up the next year after the area is disturbed/burned and flush for about 5 years after with less each year. They start popping when the oak leaves are as big as mouse ears and like periods of wet, cool/cold weather.

Very cool. I'm pretty close to you. I picked enough to get my fill. Was a fantastic season overall and peeps were finding a bunch to the East of here for weeks after I stopped looking. For sure a 'vintage' year for hunting in these parts.

Well I pretty much got skunked. Found one. lol. I think with the early spring I just got out too late. It was fun looking though. Next year. I remember years as a kid finding grocery bags full. Would like a year like that again.
