hello all...i have a problem maybe you could help me. i have some special heirloom seeds that i had for a bunch of years. well i finally decided to grow them out....but because they were 5 yrs or so old, i thought that they might not be so viable after refrig storage....WRONG!! ...out of 10 or 11 seeds it looks like only 1 or 2 have failed !! now i put 2 or 3 seeds per Jiffy biscuit and would like to separate them IF possible into more Jiffy biscuits...my question is there a relatively safe way to separate the seeling that are 4 or 5 days with seed leaves and small real leaves showing ? i really dont want to just pinch the extras to thin!..plez tell me if i can save them all???

Well yes you can separate them but have to be very careful.

I would give them a drink of water first. With jiffy material wet you should be able to gently tear it apart. Each individual seedling will have it's own root mass so care is needed.

The roots will probably be connected to the jiffy material. I would then put this and each individual seedling into separate pots containing soil or coco or a 60/40 coco/perlite mix. Then give water to settle the roots in.

Carefully cut the webbing off of each puck.

Drop them into a 5-gal bucket of room-temp water. (Yep... the whole plant... submerged. It won't hurt it. :D)

Gently massage all the peat/coco out of the roots.

After that, you'll be able to gently pull the plants apart and the roots should slip freely.

Enjoy and Stay Safe! :tree:

Messin with baby roots can be risky, one oppsie, and that opertunity could be lost. soooo I'd say, let them grow and take clones,,,,,,,,

Go ahead and move the troublesome threesome into a bigger container and let them veg - take clones from there. Once you have clones - you can flower either the clone ot the "mom" - if there's a male in the threesome - that can be a good thing,,, or not.

As long as they have a stem that won't crush under your fingers easily.... the roots will be plenty strong.

I've done this so many times I can't even begin to count. Haven't lost a single seedling.

Stay Safe!
