I believe the fan leaves are the engine room of the plant. This is where all the photosynthesis takes place. I do SOG and towards the end of flowering bottom leaves start to yellow and these are removed but I don't touch the top ones.

You can't even tell I touched them....

If it is bushy and you need to I say yes, if you can go without then no. I leave what I can, but remove what I think needs to be. Must be selective.

So if the leaves fall off and even the yellow leaves that fall off do you still save those to make bubble hash or do you just save the leaves from the plant once you cut her down and harvest the plant??

I wouldn't bother with the yellow leaves, they are just rubbish. If your going to make hash use the trim with all the trichomes on it.

i grow trees so i pull mine and dont trim any lower growth...when i used to grow sog i trimmed the bottom of the plant to give one fat main cola but never pulled leaves cause the lights are so close. but i believe with big trees its a must. if i pull the leaves and leave the bottom popcorn it all turns into nice nugs. if i leave the fan leaves on large trees and trim the bottom stuff i loose yield. but smaller plants just trim the bullshit off and leave the leaves! my opinion

i remember reading something on here, someone trimmed all the leaves off and they all grow back in 1-2 weeks bigger and stronger.

i think they trimmed it not once but twice all the fans.
it turned out a monster but i think at the end it was a male..

That is true. I did this about a week or so ago and the leaves are all coming back.

Not really the giant fan leaves, but the little 'sucker' leaves are back and seems to be a lot more of them. All the big long fan leaves are not getting so big since the colas are starting to choke them out.

George, Tokin, Lazyman, + rep, Thanks for getting me thinking. You guys have your skills nailed down and by promoting this kind of brainstorming many people will benefit via better meds. Thanks and +rep.

I tried to think of an answer to this question based on all I have done, seen, experienced, etc ... All I can come up with is I do what the plant tells me. Bubba, she loves for her bud sites to get more light and the more they do the bigger and frostier they get. Purple Erkel, dense frosty buds (even at bottom) no matter the amount of light. Hog dense buds at bottom with little light, but they only get frosty if you prune so they get a full stream of light. Mazar, fan leaves are crazy big but cutting them off stunts her growth bud sites need to be trained (tucked) between the fan leaves. The list goes on .....

Bottom line:
I guess my personal opinion is, "To trim fan leaves or not" is strain dependent as well as goal dependent, and the more you work with the strain (via mother for consistent results) the better chance you have of figuring out which way to go.

Excellent trim. I love removing fan leaves to promote branching. For those that grow trees you REALLY should trim fan leaves. I cut my leaves when the neighboring shoot is about an inch long.

i just trimmed half of my room...I'll know in 3 weeks with the final weigh in if there was a significant increase in production/quality!
