i see lots of coco mixtures used in hydro systems... and i see lots of 100% coco systems too. what works the best? does adding certain items to the mix help balance ph levels? what is your recipe?

I am also interested in this.

Can you use successfully coco as a hydro medium, with or without coco nutes?

Which is best?

looks like there is some interest in this... i know it can easily be used inhydro setups... i will be using a coco mix as my media for use in closet setup in my sig... ive seen coco/perlite mixes, coco/verm mixes, cocp/hydroton etc... just wondering what the benefits are of such mixtures and what effects they would have on ph levels?

read dongle69's thread for one if you are interested in coco ebb and flow

if you don't know the alkalinity of you water supply, than don't bother with obsessing over pH management

I've used a 60/40 coco/perlite mix in the past, no problems.

Now I just do ebb/flow in hydroton.

I don't check the PH, never have but I monitor EC levels regularly and maintain a large res,

Never had any issues with the strain I grow.

I've used coco straight & with perlite, and could tell no difference. Coco does build up a lot of salts, so you have to be careful. I'm currently using 100% coco with floranova veg & bloom with a couple of more normal additives(Liquid karma, silica blast, calmag, sweet). I run it on a table drain to waste, and the girls just love it. Check gallery for pics. Good thing about coco, Is if you're a cheap skate schmepskate like my friend, you can use for about 2-3x...Just use a good zyme and clean, and you're good to go>>>

Hope that helps

OP

I have been using straight coco coir feed to waste in catch trays for years with GH.

In my new room, I am setting up big ebb and flow type trays so I can do a drip-with-runoff style grow. Haven't decided whether it will be recirculating or not yet, but the drainage availability is going to make life much easier I think.

I have seen people use coco in coco pots with ebb and flow with good results.

Coco definitely holds onto the nutes, my feed is 1000ppm and my runoff is usually 1400 to 1700 ppm, with everything growing perfectly. When my runoff is off the charts I know it's time to flush.

I'm the opposite, I am religious about PH, but after mixing 0-6-9 a thousand times I stopped checking PPM's. Occasionally I'll check the runoff, but you can seriously chase your tail trying to dial in runoff in coco.

I haven't had a problem yet with being religious about what goes IN, and giving a PH'd water/super dilute solution every 10 days with little to no runoff.
