Older slang for schwag ... a question

Hey older stoners,

I have a quick question. My old man, who would have been 53 now, used to refer to schwag as "Haymarket Riot." I've never heard anyone else refer to it as that, so I was wondering if that was an older stoner thing, or if it was just something he made up.

So, has anyone else heard that?

but always called
BULLSHIT!!!
It would get you a buzz and nothing else. good for when times were dry.

In the 40's weed was called tea, In the 30's if you smoked you were a viper, I think that is jazz slang . Also pretty sure it was called weed just like nowdays.

I'm going to post this because I thought some of you might get a small kick. This is from the william s burroughs book junky.

This takes place in 1946 or 47 in NYC. He buys a kilo of "first class new orleans weed" for seventy dollars so 2.2 pounds. He sells it "75 cents a stick 70 sticks to the ounce." Sounds like he could have made a tidy profit. He might have said an ounce price but I can't remember

Yeah, you would hear a lot of "downtown brown" too. I just happen to really like the term Haymarket Riot, with the ties to anarchy and all.

In fact, if legalization comes in my lifetime, my "coffee shop" might just be called Haymarket Riot.

Ah, I didn't know there was a haymarket riot in Cincy. The one I know about was in Chicago.

My old man invented his own names for just about all kinds of stuff, so it doesn't surprise me that he made this one up too. He was a serious history buff, so it also doesn't surprise me that he made this one up. Although, there does appear to be a band called Haymarket Riot that started in '67, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the origin too.

Oh, and the reason I was curious about the tie to Cincy is that I was wondering if you might have known him, cause he spent a good amount of time down south.

I used to live down in the Fla. Keys way back and the worst smoke was called, bilge weed, or diesel weed (because of the diesel smell from being in the boat bilge), sea weed (because of the wet sea water smell and taste and worst of all the salt burn of it when smoked from water logged bales that washed up on the shore).
