There are hundreds of millions of quakes worldwide every year, I'm guessing most of them are unreported because if we reported every quake you'd never hear anything else. But most of those are so small you'd never notice them. There are only hundreds of thousands that are noticeable to most people, so that would be only a few thousand a day tops. Even if we only reported on the quakes strong enough to cause damage to buildings/etc that would still be a few thousand a year.

The only thing abnormal about the recent earthquake's is their placement, being so close to metropolitan areas.

My friend is an earthquake engineer and his company on average worked about 1 major case a year. Its april and they already have five.
