What's new

Took some clones tonight, and they wilted quickly! What went wrong?

Ok, clones not looking so good, so I Just got a new seedling heating mat and a digital temp controller. It has a probe in it and stuck it in the coco. Set it to 80, and says it is 79 in the cup. I dont think they will make it, but thats ok. The conditions were not perfect, now they are. So the next round will do perfect, I have faith. Temps were 2 low at first, 2 much light at first, and they wilted really fast!

I was wondering though. Does eveyone clone with pre-nuted Coco or plain Coco and pH water? How do you determine the correct moisture for the initial cutting to be placed in? I had them moist, but not soaked. I was thinking about watering to run off the night before transplant and set cups in clone cab at 75-80 overnight. Temps will be perfect, lighting perfect, but humidity is only about 35% so if they wilt this time it would have to be because of the humidity. So we shall see, this weekend.

I never put nutes into coco or jiffy pellets. The clones have no roots so can't take them up. After about 7 days I feed with a seaweed solution. Some people start to feed with a week nute solution, like .5 or less EC.

For what it's worth, I've only had wilting problems when I used a rooting GEL. If it's on too thick, it seems to block uptake. Both the powders and the liquids have worked better for me - but the liquid is what I use now. I use Vita Grow and so far, it's my favorite. But yeah, it should've perked up by now, even using the gel - and I'm sure it has - :D

I was thinking the same thing about the Gel. Even though they look like ass, I see roots on some! So hopefully they bounce back. If not, oh well...will take more. Next time will go lighter on the Gel. But more importantly, the environment is perfect now...so should work great.

Never had problems with gel. I use clonex purple for semi-hardwood cuttings. I propagate plants of another kind professionally and always use clonex. We buy it in 5 litre containers.

Gels cause wilting, I don't think so and I put it on thick.

try not letting any air in them. cut them go right to gel or watter. i have luck with going to watter until they root.

Dude, I've had it happen... no sense arguing with everything said... LOL - jeeze... when someone has a negative experience with something, it does no good for someone else to say that they don't... I say again, the plant can't uptake the gel and the water has trouble getting through it for a while if it's on there too thick... I've had it happen!!! I don't have the problem with Vita Grow... Now that I think about it, I did have more of a wilt problem when I cloned in coco - that's one of the reasons I went to Grodan rockwool...

Explain your entire cloning process, health of mums, were they well hydrated and fed, propagation medium, dome-no dome, temps, bottom heat, lights.

Then we might have an idea on why those clones are wilting.

Well a couple of the clones taken 8 days ago have roots. Got rid of the rest....but took alot more. This time they did not wilt at all! I soaked stems in cool water for about 10 min, then used less gel than last time, then put into clone cabinet. This time the environment is perfect. Heating pad set to 79 and only 26 watt cfl for lighting. Did not spray this time either. So, not getting my hopes up yet...but they are all standing! Which is not the case last time. Hopefully they all root and look good in a week. Thanks for the tips, will update.

Glad things are looking up for you! I dome my cuts with vents maybe 1/4 open and put a little water in the bottom of the propagation tray to keep humidity up. I've got a pretty good breeze blowing across the top of the dome due to where it sits in my setup so the plants are still getting plenty of air.
