what is the difference between sunlight supply's sun system 1 and 10. is it that the 10 is imported? are these sun system ballasts really worth the extra $ ? the series 1's are always more expensive. i hear they are the best. I am getting scared away from going the cheap route w an HTG digi ballast.

From what I can tell the SS-1's have the ability to change from 240/120 without opening it up. The SS-10's don't. I rewired my ss10 for 240 and it was pretty simple.

I have an SS10 and my review of it is "I makes light"
I don't really know what else to say.

I also have a few galaxy's and they are really lightweight and don't hum. I'm not a good enough grower to know if they are worth it or not, but my back will thank me for the digi's.

so far i have found that the ss-10s are made in asia. the ss-1s have different cooling mechanisims ie. aluminum walls n what not and a high temp capacitor.

Not on the ones I bought,.

I have ss-10's that are 240,120 and hps/MH switchable. You don't have to open anything, just a different cord for 240.... which is what I run.

The sunsystem 1 has an extruded aluminum housing whereas the cheaper ss10 is a cheaper stamped piece. Traditionally, extruded aluminum ballasts...... much like car stereo amplifiers are superior at dissipating heat.

The ss1 used to use all us components inside (Adavanced brand I think) Also has a trap door in the back so you can replace your cap much easier...... I replace mine every year. It does make a significant difference.

The SS10 is all china I believe.

If I was ponying up the dough to get an SS-1 I would just go digi with a quantum or something similar.

SS10's buzz and get seriously hot. But at $115 new, my price I can't avoid em :D

There are ss10 switchables and regular ss10's. Mine were the regular kind, but it is so easy to switch it doesn't really matter.

I completely agree about the buzz, heat, and price.

I'm fine with mine. I bought a couple Budget grow II's which I didn't like, they have an exposed coil.

So I got the SS10's and could mount them on the wall etc. I have no problem recommending them. But, they're like the second cheapest ballast out there so yeah, they buzz and are hot.

No big deal and they work

The Sun System 1's are probably the best made ballasts on the market if you are going with a non-digital system. I would rate them as the safest to run 24/7 and not worry about burning down your house. They actually used to be alot more expensive back in the day but the price has come down signifigantly probably from all the competition. If it was my money I would surely go for the SS1 system if at all possible it's a much better made ballast for all the reasons listed above. A SS1 1000 HPS, new Hortilux bulb, and you are set to grow a few pounds of dank and still be able to sleep good at night. Worth the few extra bucks? Oh yeah. ;)

Sun Systems 1 is the shit! I own two, a 400 and 1000 hps, both made in America with name brand components(Advance). I also own one of Sunlights mid level ballasts (Gro-Pro) and it is made in China. I will continue to use Sun System 1 ballasts with Hortilux bulbs. I am not a fan of the digital ballasts that all seem to be made in China. I think we may be lucky they still sell the Sun System 1 ballasts. I was told by a salesman that they sell 20 imported magnetic and digitals to every Sun System 1.

I have 7 SS1 ballasts: 5x600HPS and 2x400HPS. After I discovered their capacitors failing within 5-6 years, costing me untold thousands in lost yield, I bought a SS10 when I needed a 400MH. Given the cost of replacement caps and the sour taste in my mouth, I'd rather spend less than a $100 on a ballast that I don't mind tossing into the trash.
