Hey Grow Nerd. You was a guest a while go right? I thought I saw some posts from you as a guest. Welcome!!

You asked about single phase 240v with a neutral. That would require 240v coming out of one wire with a neutral to complete the circuit and that ain't how electricity is sold.

Ok, so we got a fresh 2x15 amp breaker and finished the 4 lights, and we are going to run 4 then 3 or 4 to cut down on constant usage. now all that would be needed would be a flip flop... thats a whole other story. but for now the 4kw room is good and the 3kw room is good

No. most residences and small businesses are wired for 1-phase 240v service. Meaning, this would apply to just about everyone here in the US at least.

Now, obviously a ballast wired for 240v would not use a neutral, but no one said all ballasts were wired for 240v. All I mentioned is on a 1-phase service, would digital ballasts cause problems with a standard sized neutral? I'm told that on a 3-phase service it can be an issue.

How come on the 1-phase 240v service that I (and most people) get, I can get 120v off each of the two hot legs of the 240v that I'm running to my ballasts? No neutral to ballasts or controller. I don't have 2-phase service, I'm 100% positive of it.

Haha there is no 2 phase folks only single and three phase.I'd go with a WH40 instead of the T-104 for 240V because it has an outside on-off lever unlike the T-104

I ended up with a t104 just becuase i couldnt find a WH40
why does every one want an outside on off id be afraid id bump it and flip it off or something.

you are jumping all over the place mixing 240v & 120v and talking about neutrals with 240 and switching one leg of 240

I try to explain things to people, in direct response to their questions, in terms they can understand, not give them an electrical education - I guess you and MP are doing a fine job of that on the sticky thread.

Many people don't understand how 240v works. After you've explained it a few hundred times you kind of hone down your repertoire to where you manage to get the point across clearly while typing the fewest possible words. I'm not about to go into a dissertation on sine waves and electrical theory every friggin time I answer a 240v vs. 120v question. People seem to understand the concept of "phases" a lot more easily than "legs" or most the other nomenclatures I've tried.

It really matters not to the conversation I'm having if "phase" is the technically correct term. If someone wants an electrical education they should go to school, not listen to some clown on the internet. But I am pretty good at helping people gain a mundane understanding of their electrical systems and how their connections work. That's all they want, that's what I offer.

I spoke of switching the hot leg of a 120v device (go read the post again) with a double pole breaker. I believe blazeoneup does this with his Intermatics.

Its nice to be able to control your lights manually. Maybe the room is empty and you want to turn lights on to clean, or shut lights off to change bulb, clean hood. Maybe you are working in the room and need an extra hour so you leave lights on.

Its just nice to have.
