Tortured Restricted Sativa

At the beginning of the ultimate sativa thread is a method of restricting sativas to get a small size plant. I came up with this way to try and follow that idea. I chose two seeds of the largest variety I had seeds for--Senor Garcia from Reeferman which is Oregon Purple Thai x Panama Red.

I put four inches of wet sterilized soil into a 32 ounce clear take out container, planted a sprouted seed and sealed it up. After the two seeds came up in a warm place I put them right away under a 12/12 hps light. The seeds grew well but slowly. The humidity is 100% so transpiration is restricted. A tiny amount of soil with no ferts is all they get. Their roots are very small and no where near root bound. They're starting to show a bit of nute deficiency but that was recommended. Once they got to the clear top they started to bend themselves and are going round and round in a cork screw. They recommended bending on the other forum and these are being bent automatically.

I've never opened the containers or done anything and the seeds are now almost two months old. They're growing without any kind of mould or trouble. I don't know how long I'll leave them with the tops on, maybe until they force the top off themselves.

From the top you can see it going round and round. Another month until all the stretching is over and I can repot it into a larger pot. Hopefully by that time it'll be into flowering mode. The theory is that by restricting the size you will get less volume, but you will still get some nice sativa buds. We will see how this experiment turns out.

The stem is strong at the bottom and it's sending roots down from above the soil because of the humidity in the sealed terrarium.

If this thing works it's been real easy so far. Zero maintenance to date.

I call this automatic LST low stress training. It seems there are branches forming at each internode. All the growth is at the same level so the hormones are building up the stem. It's nice and thick down below. No matter how much it grows it can't get any taller than 4".

The condensation drips down the sides and waters the soil. The top is wet and slippery. The tip can slip and slide around and weave itself in and out. The plant makes oxygen and co2 alternately and seems able to survive in it's biodome. The idea is to control the growth so no fresh air goes in. The hps light is good and bright.

Eventually the top will come off. Once it comes off the soil will dry and the leaves will start working and then the roots will grow. Once the roots fill up the soil the plan is to add a layer of good soil on top of the old soil, and then another one and it will be a long time before it gets taken out of the 32 ounce container. They ask for small pots in the other forum and this is as big as it gets for a while. Small pots will keep the plant short. Don't forget this is a giant sativa that I could not grow in my set up.

Adding soil to the top of your container will be of little benifit to the plant. Roots will not grow up, only down and out. You would be better off removing the plant and adding the soil to the bottom. When you remove tho lids keep them as far from the light as you can for a couple of days to give thm a chance to dampen off. If you don't, they will fry.

While interesting... there are much better ways to go about flowering sativas in a small space to get some nice sativa buds.

100% humidity and stagnant air is no good.

You can see what I'm dealing with here:

Senor Garcia
Oregon Purple Thai x Panama Red. A trippy sativa in honor of Jerry. A joint of this will send you on a journey through space and time . For experienced growers only, these plants are very touchy feeders preferring organics and a light feeding regimen, 1/3 to 1/2 strength . Striking purple hues and red hairs make this some pretty pot as well. A small % will be mutants due to the OPT influence . Very pleasant sweet and sour aromas.

Inside Finish Time: 11-12 weeks / Outside Finish Time: early December / Variation: 2 / Odor Level: 3 / Mold Resistance: 5 / Yield: 3 / Ease of Growth: 2.5 / Feed Level: 2.5 / Stretch: 3.75x / Sativa/Indica: 90/10

The parents:

Panama red old school red hair from panama this is the pure strain very similar to the modern punta rojo from colombia but much stronger smoke very nice pure breeding strain that has been proven a good breeder in my panama red skunk and a few others . 10-13 weeks flowering time.

Oregon Purple Thai is Highland Oaxaca Gold x Chocolate Thai.

So I am experimenting with a pretty large long flowering sativa. But according to my research I also have to finish it in a very fast flowering time which is done by cutting off all the nutrients so it will say to itself "I'm running out of fuel here, I better finish fast. The grower says 81 days, I'm looking for 50 days.

The grower says I`ll be flying through space and time. I don`t need to do that over and over, but a few fabulous trips would be nice. We`ll see how much I get.

It looks like I chose the right seeds to play with. Good mold resistance is important with 100% humidity. Light feeding is what it likes.

This is a fantastic idea. Don't let them get you down. I have had a similar experience by accident. I gathered some rich dirt down by a creek and put it in some five gallon buckets. The buckets were opaque and you could somewhat see through them. I put a sealing lid on them and left them. I had planned on using the dirt but didn't get to it. I left them in full sunlight. I live in the Southeastern US so you bet they got plenty of Sun. Later I noticed that grass was growing in them. It grew that way the whole summer. It's interesting that the Sun didn't burn up the plants. Maybe the condensation of water on the sides of the bucket removed enough heat for them to survive.
I have some hazes I'd like to try this with. Maybe a little taller jar. Say 12" tall. Wait til they flower and then remove. I'd like a small amount of seeds, some smoke and pollen to breed with. It would take very little room. I would think if you put your soil in and microwaved it it would keep down any mold, fungus etc. Don't drop this thread like so many others. Keep it up. It would be nice to have some more close up pictures.
You know I just had an idea. I've got a few of those buckets left. Maybe I should put a few plants in them to test this summer. Cost me nothing but a few seeds.

this is a great idea man, never would have thought a sealed enviro would work. my thinking was the o2 produced would not be sufficient w the co2 in there, as well. 100% humidity would suggest mold or stem rot, but none so far, eh?? this is interesting, indeed. i will keep checking this post man, good show. + rep

It's not my idea. It's ZigZagFag's idea. I just glommed on to it because it's so good. The grass, i mean yard grass or weeds-not weed weed, grew in the buckets all summer but I broke the lids and they died. Wasn't really thinking about keeping them at the time. Only triggered the memory when I saw this post. I got some Sativas crosses I may put in a bucket and see what happens. Don't have enough space to do anything indoors for a while. The point is not yield but seeds. I have some seeds that I want the F2 but I don't care about the F1. They're auto crosses.

Thanks man. I didnt know you were talking about grass - grass LOL. Anyhoo - I would certainly like to know how this experiment has worked out. Any updates ZigZag?
