Rhode Island Considers Legalization of Marijuana

A nine-member legislative panel is reviewing options for decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana possession and sales in Rhode Island. The panel discussed the economic benefits of legalization including a new source of tax revenue, less law enforcement and judicial expenses. Apparently this panel is looking favorably at legalization, probably because there are no law enforcement representatives on the panel.

I have to disagree with you there mate. I think public smoking is the last thing we'd want to see if pot is ever legalized. It'd be perfect excuse for the gov to trash pot again. I can imagine the media propaganda.

Yes, puritanical America requires anything "adult" be hidden from view. That's why liquor laws are so strict, and you can't see into most bars.

By keeping the human "vices" hidden, we only make it more mysterious (and enticing) for children, whose ignorance of the subject later works against them.

While I can't stand having to inhale others tobacco smoke in public, I don't have the same problem with marijuana smoke. But I do understand their reasons for wanting to keep it from public view, I just think those reasons are bogus.

And as cannabis is used to treat more and more children for various diseases including autism, the idea that marijuana needs to be kept hidden away from children will eventually be open to debate.

I believe that kids shouldn't smoke cannabis unless they have parental consent or doctor's recommendation. This is because it interferes with memory and therefore the learning process.

It would be amazing if they green light this......That means Mass. and Ct. will both follow suite......

I was just kidding guys, duh... I don't condone public usage of anything, hence "coffee shops"...anyway, I really hope this goes through. I love RI.

Rhode island is having it tough. actual unemployment in the state is up to 18%. The state has no money and the cities and towns are suffering as well. people are starting to move out. RI is only 60 miles x 33miles so it makes moving out pretty easy.

lmfao pete66..yeah you kin be a state away from anywhere there in like 20 minutes, but the running joke is everything is too far to drive!

Some of the user comments for that article are very disturbing. Anytime there is a Cannabis story in the news here in Denver the user comments are 99.99% pro canna. It's disheartening to see so many blatantly ignorant anti canna comments for one article. American minds are still in the 1950's with respect to so many issues. The brilliance of a greedy, corrupt, deceptive government...

I agree with HossCartwright, some of those comments are outright retarded, those people claim all sorts of bullshit... Such as that legalization will not bring any tax revenue "because it's impossible to enforce"... All potheads I know would prefer buying their stuff without fear of being arrested, at a cheaper price, with the guarantee that it isn't tainted and that they're not supporting organized crime with their purchase. Practically all claims against legalization just don't have a real life basis.
