masking the smell

Hi guys i'm looking for some advice on how best to hide the smell when growing. i've seen videos with people sticking things on walls inside and outside the grow rooms to nutralise the smell, not sure what there called or if there any good. any advice is very welcome guys thanks.

i buy the 1 litre jar lasts 2 grows i only really need 2 use it last 4/5 weeks of a grow

It really depends on how big your grow is, how stinky your strains are, and how close your neighbors are. I would never recommend someone forgo a good carbon filter and fan combo, as they are the best weapon available for removing odors, not just masking them (which can sometimes be just as suspicious!)

How many plants and what kind of spot is your grow at? If an apartment or something you need top-notch odor control or you're gonna end up having to cut them down mid-flower due to the smell.

grow is 3 to 4 plants grown under the stairs in a ground floor flat.

I've had single plants stink me out of house and home just a few weeks into veg. I'd build/buy the scrubber first, then build the space.

I usually advise folks to buy/build a scrubber before they buy lights, just to make sure it's covered. Considering for many that filter is the difference between jail and freedom, do you really want to take chances? If so, you won't be around very long.

Go for a good fan + filter combo straight away. Do not kid around with these plants, they might stink up your entire apartment/house without it.

The thing with scrubbers is, by the time you realize you need one, it may be too late

If you're going to use an air cooled light, make sure you tape the shit out of the reflector, or arrange your fan so it pushes air through the hood, rather than pulling.

Otherwise, you will pull untreated air into the exhaust through leaks in the hood, and end up with an odor problem either way.

Also, use good duct, not the one layer cheap stuff.. A few pinholes in your ducting will pull in enough smelly air to get you a visit from the cops or the robbers.

Me personally? I push air through the hoods, use solid duct (Thermoflo is the brand I prefer,) use an oversized filter (can50 taking about 200cfm) and I use Ona as a secondary form of odor control.

It's a lot to think about and incorporate into your setup, but I tell you, I sleep pretty damn good at night knowing all those things are in place.

edit: actually i see a good reason for your comment about taping up the hood, my bad on saying it was "overly complicated"

All that taping and whatnot seems overly complicated. I just setup rooms like this, haven't seen a down side yet. Had to draw in part of the ducting (yellow lines) as it is covered by a separate intake duct. Blue arrows show direction of air flow. It ends up being vented into an attic and the tent itself keeps negative pressure to ensure no smell escapes.

So OJ your setup is close to good, but there are two small drawbacks:

1) your fan is sucking hot air in this instance, which isn't as good for it as cold(er) air. Any leaks in your ducting/hood will be pulled in AFTER the filter, so stinky air is sucked outside too.
2) Centrifugal fans work better pushing air than pulling it. It's no mistake that in the HVAC industry fans are always used to push, not pull.

I also think your fan noise would be slightly diminished if it were inside your tent than right in the window, but it would be a minor difference.

As I was looking at it I understand what bogangles (and lazymans 2nd part of point 1) meant about taping as well, since it's possible for air to be sucked in past the filter. Personally I've never had that problem but it's solid advice and something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the info guys, plenty to think about there will have to spend a bit more time setting this up better to be safe than sorry. Any suggestions on best sites to get a carbon filter/scrubber or are the easy to make?. cheers.

A DIY is relatively simple though in most cases, it may be as cheap, if not cheaper, to buy factory due to the high cost of bulk carbon. DIY makes the most sense in small cabs with custom sized considerations. At the risk of tooting my own horn, should you go DIY, see my "addition" in post 232.
