I need help with a stealth vine; I have dutchman pipe aka calico flower seeds

I need a stealth vine.

I have a deck - 33 X11 - that no homes/apts. can see from above, only below from across the river. Here is a pic of the deck from the house view and below.

I was looking for a vine that could cover the slats so I could take some autoflowers out this summer with noone the wiser. My idea was to plant something in these 5 gallon buckets from the deck and drape them over the side to the slope below.

After researching, the Dutchman Pipe flower seemed like my logical choice.

It is a fast growing plant, taking over everything, and is considered one of the best covering vines for privacy.

It smells. More than one posting has says it smells like rotting meat. I can only assume that helps with stealth, besides, I used to think skunks smelled bad.

The flower looks like a pipe from the side!

And it's fuk'd up in the front:

It's poisonous. It is a barrier to many MMJ pests including leaf miners and trips.

It's the breeding ground of the Tiger swallowtail butterfly, and they are pretty.

So it sounds great and I order the seeds, and woah, the packaging says that germination takes 1-3 months! soak, place on top of peat with good exposure to light.

Yet another seed bank says "These seeds germinate at +70º F. Place the pot in a polythene bag and in darkness until after germination."

Does anyone know what I should do? Should I just give up on this pipe dream/vine this year? Any other suggestions for a different vine?

Thanks,
-L

Not sure how much area you want to cover but I would suggest you try to find something already established and in the largest container you can find for this season.

I think calico is awesome and you could definitely have massive coverage next year if you can get them established this year.

Alternatively, you could simply buy some bamboo, or reed shades and cut them to the height of the handrail, attach it all around the perimeter and then fill that deck with every ornamental or fruiting plant you ever desired. So you would have the privacy below and lots of other plants to 'distract'.

Good luck!

big nice pots and pretty flowers, they won't even see the canni pots back behind them. LST oustside gives you 6ft wide octopuses.!!!!!
