Bucket OR Tote DWC

So i am getting a 600 w HPS/MH Switchable light. I am still unsure on weither i want to do 4 Single Buckets with unknown amount of airstones or a 12-15 Gallon Tote with 3-4 12" Airstones. My pump is a 600 GPH pump with 4 outlets. I have heard Single buckets are good because if you do something wrong its only to one plant not all in the tote. But ive heard its also a pain to drain and replenish all those buckets. Comments?

I run independent bubble buckets, about 20.. Myself I don't mind the work or changing out the buckets.. and the way I do it.. I feel its not really that much work..

What do you plan on doing with the tote??

For the tote i was going to do 3 12" Airstones with 4 netpots but it does seem like it would be easier to do 4 single buckets what would be the best airstone for buckets? If the airstone didnt sit flat in the bottom of the bucket would that still work and give me better bubbles?

Well I'll be honest with you... I use.. Wal-Mart airstones.. .. I do want to get away from those.. I have seen these stones in a hydro store that are round like a bucket and would sit on the bottom of a bucket.. I was thinkin of trying those.. or I have seen flexiable air stones. which is like a tube with holes in it.. your local pet store/ fish store would have a good varitety of stones too... I know mine does.. :D

I live in Colorado to :) If i just set the airstone in the bucket does it need to be flat on the bottom or can i still get bubble action with it being sideway?

From my experience.. they can sit sideways.. altho it would be better for it to sit on the bottom.. I try to get my lil air stones as close to the bottom as possible this way if the plants decide to drink more then normal.. or I some how forget shit.. cuz I dont do that often lol.. my air stone isnt just sitting not in water..

Good point i guess ill just order some of the round Bubble disk online and ill tell you how they do ill probably try a round one in 2 buckets and the other 2 some smaller airstones that can fit in the bottom. I also forgot to ask is there a specified color for the Bucket the site im ordering from has them in Every color Red Green White Grey Black Etc Etc

It doesn't matter what color.. I think even black bucket... if not "heavy duty" enough can let in light.. I would wrap your bucket in plastic.. or even extra coats of spray paint... make it as dark as possible..

If you are in the denver area Way to Grow has black buckets that are nice. and they sell the net pot lids, pumps, and ebb and flow fittings. I can vouch they are totally light proof.

To the OP:

Run individual buckets, or better yet a RDWC. Growing multiple plants in one tote is a PIA if they get big, and plus with the bucket you can use netpot lids which are way easier to work with. As for airstones, i used to use wal-mart ones on some pvc, but i have switched to the 2" airstones from the hydro store. They are way larger and heavy enough to just sit at the bottom of the bucket. And not nearly as expensive as the big round disc ones. I run 2 per bucket and oxygen is not an issue. One other plus, they dont get brittle and break nearly as quickly and easily as the small stones do.

Buckets with 6" air stones. Get the cheap blue ones they work great and they dont float.
