Hi ya'll

I recently got this 1k ballast HPS but it does not come with the mogul base, just the ballast itself.

I took a closer look to it and its not a regular 1k ballast, the power wire is normal but the cable for the mogul is very weird.

I went to some store and ask around but no luck, they dont sell that type of adapter for it anymore, so i bought a male adapter for it but i need to connect the mogul base to wire.

Sorry im really high so im sure i dont make any sense here, let me get some picture s

I have this guy

picture.php

The wire that connec to the mogul look at this

picture.php

and this is the power core, normal stuff
picture.php

then i went out and bought this guy,

picture.php

But to make it work i have to connect this guy to this guy

picture.php

Is it possible to wire them together? is there any place that sell this adapter? Please help me.

I have little knowledge about electric but i am willing to do what it takes to make this thing work

cheers,

Hi I recently hooked up a ss2 hood to a ballast kit and ended up just cutting the ss2 cord and wiring it directly to the ballast leads.

I think hydrofarms sells a ss2 to hydrofarms cord.... I thought about getting one but it would add like 5 more feet to the distance between my ignitor and bulb so I was worried about it firing up the bulb properly.

My understanding is that you don't want your cord from the ignitor to the bulb to be too long or it might not fire up the bulb properly, someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that...and it might be bulb dependant.

here's the adapter that I think you might need so you won't have to do any cutting. you can also just get a ss2 to bare wire female connector and only have to cut your ballast cord...

BTW, I have no experience with bghydro..it's just the first site that popped up when I searched for the connectors.

good luck. and always get a second opinion....there's plenty of guys on IC that are far smarter then me ;)

oh yeh you could also get the ss2 plug to bare wires and wire it directly into the mogul socket...and just not even use that pc looking plug...I was going to do that but couldn't figure out how to open up the mogul on my hood to get to the wires..

oh and I'm referring to your plug as a ss2 (sunsystems2) cord cuz it looks like mine from my hood...don't know if that's the official name for it.

edit: oh hey turns out that first plug is only like a foot long....I guess I shoulda gotten it...but I hate waiting on shipping when everything is ready to be fired up.

edit: I don't know if that hydrofarm -> ss2 cord is the right one..i just assumed it was a hydrofarms ballast cuz i saw that HFcord. if you don't mind doin a little wiring I think your best bet is to go with the female -> bare wires and wire it directly into the socket.

thanks for the info man, i have those plugs that you're talking about but they dont fit and i have to re-wire them, which i dont know how lol
the ballast i got has a hydrofarm old plugs which they dont sell anymore ? i asked a few guy at the hydro shop and others they said the same,

they also told me my best shot would be cut them and wire them togheter, i really dont know how to do that so i need some one to guide me through it.

Is it possble to wire them together? or someone sell an adapter like that
sorry im repeating myselfagain

let me get some pics again

They make adapters about 10" long that fit between the ballast cord and the mogul cord. Look online, you'll find lots of them once you find the right search term.

Return the cord you bought, you don't need it. It's a 240v power cord for powering a ballast, not for running from the ballast to a light.

So you're going to run it 240v correct because the plugs on the ballast look like they are for 120v? if it's 120 then you got the wrong plug. The input plug with the horizontal blades is 240 but the power cord for the ballast to plug in the wall looks 120 need clarification

If it's 240 then

Honestly, if you have access to the adapters, great, but otherwise

cut the ends off,
Use a stripper or a razor blade to strip back the sheathing
then strip the wire from the individual conductors on both cords

Then, use wire nuts, solder, or crimp connectors to make the connection. Red to red, black to black green to green. No white neutral in 240v

When I do this, I wrap each joined conductor with electrical tape and then the cable as a whole with tape. I just go right over the wire nuts. In this case I would use 600v crimp connectors but I have the tools s

You can get fancy with shrink wrap etc etc but not necessary if it's hard to find. Normally I always advocate getting the correct cord but you gotta work with what you've got.

If you want a pic of the cable stripped I can post it when I get back in abit

Roll of tape 2 bucks
Wire nuts 50 cents
Razor blade etc.....

Hope that helps

There's only 3 wires involved.

Don't join the wires. Remove the wire from the ballast, note and mark the connections (black, white, green). Cut both heads off an ext cord and connect it: inside the box the way the old wire did, connect the other end to your socket (black, white) and reflector housing (green).

Or, cut the ext cord in half, leaving the heads on both ends. Run one cut end into the box, the other end to your socket/reflector. Now they'll plug/unplug.

Note, inside the ballast box, while ground will be green and com will be white, the hot wire may NOT be black if you have a multi-tap. In this case choose the wire that says 120 volts. Mark the wires on disassembly. Say, tape flags that read 1,2,3 or hot, com, ground so you KNOW where they go. Note also, ground (green) is not part of the power circuit. It connects the metal reflector to the metal ballast box and both directly to the planet earth so any stray voltage will go to ground through the wire and not your body.

The ballast is not 240, it is a 120v

I took both of you guys advices and open it up, here is a series of pictures and how i connect them, like i said i need you guys to confirm that i didnt messed up, so before i fire it up i need the OK :D

I open it up and match the wires

This is the ends of the mogul

Here i am holding the end of the mogul vs the ballast plug

Removed the Ground from the old wire and put a new ground from the mogul

Remove the Black from the old wire and put the new black from the mogul

Did the same with the white

Feel a little stupid. Didn't realize the socket was already wired (gotta learn to read someday)

Hardwired straight to the box is good. Once upon a time, they all came that way. Looks safe to plug in to me.

Looks like you got everything where it belongs. That was a lot easier, and cheaper, than even trying to find the f'ing adapter.
