What's new

Just got rocked by a 6.9

S

Sir_Nugget

so im standing in my bathroom, I just took a leak, and I feel the floor start to sway. Thing is my house is on sand or dirt/sand very near the beach, and it felt like it took 2 whole seconds for the house to move a foot to the left, then a foot to the right.. I thought i was tripping, but it turned out to be a 6.9 in baja, not too far from the border.. In my old apartment, the building would just shake, and rattle... this time the place just moved really slow, shifting back and forth too slow, to be a quake... interesting to know how a quake will act on u depending on whats beneath u

I felt it pretty bad here, whole place shook a little but it was kinda wavy

I'm in San Diego! Our place shook for a good 30 seconds!

If you've ever been in an earthquake, you'll know they only last about 7 or 8 seconds. Sometimes less than that. To have an earthquake for 30 seconds is pretty hardcore man. All the glass was shaking in every house next to mine and my lights were flickering in my house. It was a trip...

Quakes are a somewhat normal thing there compared to the rest of the US. I wonder if Cali will ever be overcome by ocean.

I'm really surprised the Navy decided to use their earthquake machine on Easter Sunday so close to US soil..

That was a 7.2 actually. eeeesh soil made of sand & dirt/sand can get pretty bad during earthquakes. it quickly behaves like quicksands and is able to gobble whole houses in a matter of seconds.

Hope all Cali ICmagers and their loved ones are ok !

I'm a bit closer to the quake but we're in the mountains with a granite foundation. Much less of a rolling motion than you get in the beach communities. It was a sharp, vibrating motion for me. The cat and I stared at each other for a few seconds then he ran for the bedroom and I headed for the back door. It was amazing to see the trees vibrating along with everything else.

The largest quake I've ever experience after 50 years in the area. Exciting! :whee:

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes,
an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid.

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn,
world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak,, grunt, no, strength,
The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing!
Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with
the rapture and the revered and the right - right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed. Uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev. Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's a common misconception that Cali is going to fall into the ocean. Although I know some people would like this to happen (I'm not one of them), the Western side of the San Andreas fault will move northward, so that in 25 mil years the area/region that Los Angeles occupies will be a suburb of the area that San Francisco occupies.

Hope everyone's all right!

One of my professors was an earthquake engineer and he talked about how the number one thing in earthquake safety was the substrate used.

In the SF quake in like 92 or whatver that broke the cypress freeway, only the sections that were built on landfill failed. The sections on bedrock were fine.

Also, in Haiti, all three of the US buildings were perfectly fine (relatively speaking). Goes to show you how far we've come.
But we still have a long way to go.

Anyone life in an apartment building with parking underneath like on the ground level? Those are very unsafe in earthquake situations. The parking is considered a soft story and more then likely will fail because engineers at the time of design didn't know about a certain "force" that would be caused during the earthquake. So be careful if you live in one of those, Usually has three walls and an open wall to drive out, with apartments overhead.
