Waxy, Shiny, Thick Leaves

Hi guys.

I've noticed that the higher i push my PPM's the better some of my leaves look. They are thicker, shinier and just better looking. I grow with chem nutes in hydro. I always figure this has to do with organics/ the amount of liquid karma i would add. Maybe it has to do with silica?

So how do i get all my leaves to be waxy/shiny? Can anyone chime in?

id love to know. recently had a few violator kush like this with huge stems and waky shiny leaves.

Have the same strain going now but not the same waxy leaves, i thought it might have been stress as they were in an un-insulated attic but i could be wrong, would love to know though..

thats me 2 pennies!!!

its a combination of a hign N rating and good c02 and plenty of water ive perfected the waxy leaf thing many grows ago

This might help answer your questions on silica aka quartz

It's basically what gives the majority of things there sheen. I'm not completely sure but if my memory serves me right it also aids in the production of cell walls.
Which helps the plants overall structure strengthen.

Here's a fun fact.

It's the second most abundant mineral in the earths crust :D

Next to Feldspar.
Whatever that is.....

Yeah silica would be it. I grow with hydro nutes in straight coco but I started sprinkling diatomaceous earth on top of the coco and it rocked my world. Used to have weedy stems and rough looking leaves. Liquid silica is probably a better option but to be honest, I dig the top dressing and it's one less step mixing nutes. Doesn't affect the ph at all.

(I just applied some in that last pic)

Thanks Piney. It depends how big scale you are. I'm micro so I bought 200 grams of this from ebay and that will probably last me a year or two with just a flower cupboard and a small veg tent and fluoros.

If you are bigger scale, any good store for organic amendments or stock feed should stock it. I can't remember prices but it's very cheap compared to the other stuff they sell. It should be food grade, and finer powder will have more soluble silica. The grittier stuff is more of a slow release.

high N & even calcium cause the shiny leaves. silica is new to me. i have been look to get some DE for a solid month w/ no luck at the major places. lowes, HD, Wallyworld.....

I doubt you would find any at those places, or if you did it might be the wrong stuff. I've only seen it in stores as suggested - a proper organic gardening store, stock feed stores, and alternative type shops for it's use in natural skincare, and some people eat it too.

i plan upon feeding Remy, aka Remington Steele, some DE whe it arrives. I may even have some myself after reading this.

Foliar feeding Alg-A-Mic from BioBizz, it is the best nute/tonic I have used. only 1-3mls per litre so very economical. spray twice a day for week you have leaves like rubber plants. Its very gentle for clones/seedlings, has extra Mag and Cal. certified organic, made from algae and seaweed, choc full of micro's, what more can I say? no I don't work for them :D

Diatomaceous Earth is commonly used in many gardens. Any nursery will have it, and it's cheap. I got a few boxes of it for our non cannabis garden. Works well for most non hard shelled pests including slugs (cuts them up bad causing a painful death, or a quick retreat) and like the poster said above is a natural source of silica. It will dissolve fairly easily into the soil, so you should re-apply it every couple waterings (if not every watering) if you water from the top down. If watering from bottom up the same layer of DE will stick around until you pour water over to dissolve it.

Sorry for not answering the original question.

i think its more of dialing it in of what strain (pheno) ur running.

All i did was CNS17, and I got waxy shiny leaves on all the plants using r/o water. Leaves got super shiny during flower.

Once you dial it in you can have those nice shiny leaves through veg and thru flower. I try and keep the feedings consistent and at the same level and it works out. Plants will tell you when to back off.

careful about overfeeding--i did that once and it ruined the crop--had an almost pure sativa. I harvested, but the flavor, potency, yield, wasn't there. Also noticed that any def's during the grow and you will loose definition in the leaves, especially defs during flower
hope this helps. enjoy growing.
