400 HPS can be had for $20 and less. For the price of two of those, you can buy a system complete with proper reflector and ballast.

Everyone I know who has had one, hated them.

Also consider that although you may save a few bucks at the beginning, you're essentially getting a giant hot spot (maybe decent with a mover?) reflector that has to be replaced when the bulb is replaced (since it is the bulb).

Neat concept & gadget, but worthless in practice.

I use 600's in 4' cool tubes(2 in each) and they work great. I picked them since they seemed to be the best reflector when using cool tubes. Jorge Cerveantes book states that they are possibly the best light dispersion of all reflectors. So they are not all bad.

Now that you mention the cool tubes, it kinda makes sense to have the reflector inside the bulb! To bad they're so friggen expensive, how much did you spend for those four bulbs?

bump, anyone care to add, these are a lot cheaper now at htg. claim 11,000 more lumens on the 600 watt version.

Yep the Gavita HPS red sodiums put out 158 lumens per watt, higher than any light on the market (that I know of.) You don't need hoods for them, and are about the only bulb I would even think of putting in a cooltube for an overhead light fixture. ANything that makes it easier to hit that magical 1gpw is ok in my book.

I don't use them no, I've always run 1000w lights (and am currently doing bare bulb verticals) but if I ran 600's I'd probably run those myself. You want to replace HID bulbs every 4 months anyway (2 runs) so longevity doesn't matter unless they blow up on you for some reason.

Id like to bump this thread to see if anyone has been using these lately! They seem like the ideal light for a cool tube setup!

Hey Frank, do you use the Gavita? The only two brands I have even seen are Gavita and Chrome Dome. I didnt even know there were chinese knockoffs but I am not surprised. That is one of many things I would not trust to a knockoff manufacturer.

Gavitas back in the day that were made in Finland were the best. Later they started to outsource them all over the world and the quality dropped a bit BUT no where near as bad as the Chrome Dome ones.

Gavitas are best run on magnetic ballasts and should not be ran on digitals although you get crazy light output on digitals. I've seen them explode when ran with digitals and I've even seen in person a melted 6" net pot when the Gavita blew up and the hot glass landed on the plant/netpot almost causing a fire.

Milhouse I havent used Gavita lamps in a couple of years but only because Im not a good enough grower to get the yields out of a 600 but if Gavita ever comes out with a 1000w with an integrated reflector I would be switching to it fast as the 600 worked better than any other 600 that I compared it to there is some serious engineering in those lamps

I have seen them work well with digital lumatek ballasts but the ones with the potency regulator running the ballast at 75% power with those bulbs was way brighter than any regular 600w i ever used however its an expensive set up to put togther but gentle on the electricity bill at the end of the month
