Okay i have reverse osmosis system and i fill up a 30 gallon tank right now i just run it for so and so hours and then turn it off manually.

I would like to be able to have it automatically top off the res anytime it needs it.

What exactly would i need to get ?

Thanks +K

first, its not enough to shut off the filtered water output alone, cause the brine line will still leak water all the time, so you have to do one of two thing. your system should have come with a valve thing that couples the filtered water flow to the input water, so that if the filtered water gets shut off, so does the input water.

1) with the above mentioned coupler in place, you use a float valve in your reservoir.

2) have an electric type setup like I use, and have a float switch shut off the supply when your res fills.

the most common way is to use a float valve. float valves are easy to come by, most hydro stores have them.

hmm, my system has one black hose where the water comes in.
One yellow hose for bad water out , one blue hose for good water in.

I am not using any special tanks just a 30 gallon plastic drum.

I thought it would be possible to stop the flow before it even gets to the RO system is there no way for the float valve to intercept this connection once the tank is full ?

Overkill is under-rated.

The valve you need is called an ASO for Automatic shutoff valve, sometimes called an ASOC. Just google RO ASO and you'll find one, just make sure you get one that does 100% shutoff (some do 90%.)

This doesn't apply if you need/use a booster pump for RO, then you need the electronic kit with the electric float switch to control the pump.

yes, thats how I do it - the complicated way

electonic switch, float switch. float switch
a relay to convert the low voltage at the switch to the 110 of the electronic valve. or you can get a 12v valve relay
and the electronic valve selection of electronic valves

nothing is easy
getting an aso ro valve as mentioned above and a float valve is the simplest cheapest and most common way

IMO for larger systems and/or a better fool-proof setup, an electronic float switch tied to a solenoid valve on the water inlet (along with a float valve on the output for !SPOF). You'll likely need a low voltage transformer (12, 24, or 32v depending on your model; although I've seen line voltage models, too) to drive the solenoid and such.

At least that's the plan for my setup with a Hydrologic carbon + Merlin RO.

Edit: Pretty much what foaf said.

so would i need the 12v or 120v solenoid with this setup? i diagram would be groovy!

Not sure if line voltage solenoids are common but you can try.

Get a transformer. Home Depot might have 'em, but I usually go to Grainger for that kinda stuff.

I'm not gonna draw you a diagram, but someone else might.

Man, just reading all this makes me feel stoned.

I think im just gonna go with a sprinkler hose timer and find a sweet spot like 3 or 4 hours everyday to keep the tank topped off.

Thanks everyone.

Question.........Are you using a booster pump to supply your r/o system?

If not, a simple auto shutoff valve (asov) is plumbed inline and put a standard float switch on your res.

Here's a short video walking you thru installing it..... http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/video?file_name=68

I've never had to use a booster pump, so I'll let those more familiar with that carry on.....................
