So many view on temps and time, yours?

Title says it all. There is all sorts of literature that suggest all sorts of different temperatures and time periods for making cannabutter? Whats you opinion?

Do you measure the temperature of your butter (or other) if so..

What temps and time span do you use? Why, maybe?

I'm also interrested to know what temps and time is better.... there are many opinions on the mater and anyone seems to agree on one very good and efficient methods!?

On trick to cook cannabutter is to;

cook the buds/trim with the butter in a pot that is half filled with water! ...this way the butter/fat does not heat too much, cause it is the water that is boiling under the butter, so the butter and the canna never actually touch the hot bottom of the pan/pot, understnd what i mean.

then when you're done cooking it, sieve the plant material out of it, maybe ad some more water if you need to, and then let it cool down till the canna butter on the top is "solid" again. ..the extra plant material should also sink to the bottom when you let it reast for a while ..which is a good thing, cause "green" does not taste that good.

i use this method (didn't invent it) ..i have let the canna+butter simmer on the stove at low temps for something like 3-4 hours ( dunno if this long is needed, but it practically does all on it's own so..wtf, you know :)) ..mixing it
...every now and again turning the heat completelly off ..let it cool down abit, and then turn the heat back on (low cooking temps) ...tough job lol

I also boil in water, but i only do the leftovers from my volcano, i boil them for 30 mins uncovered and then strain them out into mason jars and let sit in the fridge overnight till i can scrape out the solid butter on top.

In the interest of doing some research and posting the results (may not be anytime soon). Can anyone recommend a highly accurate thermometer for measuring the butters (oils etc..) temperature? I am afraid the cheap walmart one I have isn't going to cut it (for the purpose of experimenting) and I don't know what I am looking for in an accurate, quality, reasonably priced thermometer.

Also, double boilers, are there any brands/designs. Are there any people recommend that are superior (and why?) when compared to your run of the mill affordable double boilers?

Next time your making butter (or oils) for edibles, do two or more smaller batches. experiment with time and temp variables. When your done get familiar with your results, use only one recipe for easier comparison, eat them over a period of time to gather a more accurate opinion on there effectiveness, take notes often and make sure to label them for accurate results. Post us the results :D

Thanks for the reply guys!

I used to use a single pot, constantly stirred it for an hour and a half, and it came out great, but it was a pain in the ass to do, would be covered in sweat. If I just let it sit, the weed would fall to the bottom and burn.

Now I use a double broiler (just use 2 regular pots, not a real one). I let it go for 3 hours now, and it turns out awesome every time. The best thing about it is I do not have to constantly stir it like with the single pot...

Cook times vary wildly and IMO everyone will have different times. I've had really good butter that only took an hour, but other times at an hour it would turn out shitty. All I know is that with a double broiler and 3 hour cook times, you will never have to worry about potency, any thing less is a crapshoot, unless you have done it many times.

I use a mercury lab thermometer but a mercury candy thermometer is accurate enough.

I use an electric fondue pot with oil instead of water. Better temperature control and you need to be above 212F for some products. A deep fryer with good controls will work too. Set your container on jar rings to isolate it from the bottom.

The temperature depends on what you are cooking. I range from 160F to 240F (300F for lollipops), depending on what I am doing.

The temperature marijuana decarboxylates at is 105° C maintain this temp for a few hours, then lower the temp to around 30-50° C for 20hrs or longer.

Thanks guys, Grey Wolf. Does anyone have any literature recommendations. Everything i've read has been very poor and basic. Im just looking to get into eatables deeper, a better understanding, less waste more results with a variety of eatables. It is the only thing reliefs my pain, smoking wont! Thanks!

Most say what you say. Far as time I have found 20,25min best. That's what confuses me, why so varied results? I rose the temp from 150-195 then slower to 210 or so, stir alot.

the Lion is going Guerrilla...
I like to simmer for at least a couple hours, at 175-180, until the butter is black and oily.

Bake at 275, and you'll have some super irie brownies. That's always been my results, at least.

I'm actually doing the process a bit differently...I see most of you let it "cook" for at least a couple of hours but here's what I do:

1) melt the butter
2) add the canna
3) cook on low temp for 10-15min
4) pour the WHOLE mixture into a container and put in in the fridge. Let it sit there for AT LEAST 24h
5) after it has sat in the fridge for the 24h remove the butter from the container and re melt it
6) once it's nice and melt again use a strainer to get all the plant material out
7) re-solidify the butter and enjoy when needed!

Now the key points with this method is to let the weed sit in the butter for at least 24h. The more it "stands still" the more THC will be combined with the various fats. Furthermore as we all know heat is one of the main things causing THC degradation and this is what actually caught my eye in the first place. Less heat = less degraded THC. Logical enough in my very honest opinion. It might not be THE best method but what I can say is after having eaten 3 muffins I was baked for about 12h so I cannot complain. (ok, it was actually a bit too much )

Peace

Thank you everyone for your posts, they've all been very helpful!!!

I'm trying to hone my cannabutter making skills to be more efficient so I have more medicine.

Anymore temperature + time recommendations

Thanks for the help! Peace
