I don't like that vegetarianism worked its way into this discussion...Besides, there is a reason why we have different kinds of teeth; ones that work for breaking down plants and ones that work for tearing meat. It's just a matter of moderation of either types of food.

As for modern agri-business, I agree that it is a load of bull. I hated watching King Corn and seeing how many acres are planted with cow corn - stuff we have to process extensively to even eat, and then there's piles of it just sitting around! Then people in the middle part of the US complain when they can't get other types of vegetables for cheap..why not grow different veggies in greenhouses? Like with the recent tomato crop problem in FLA which caused prices of tomatoes to go up in states that don't grow tomatoes.

It's pretty easy to grow tomatoes in one's backyard...

ok yeah im not trying to get everyone to be vegetarians. i would love to be completely vegetarian, and i felt amazing when i was, but it also doesnt belong in this discussion, just like organic ferts vs otherwise.

BUT i do think an emphasis on meat-eating is a big part of the problem with the food industry. it seems like a lot of people these days are pretty much carnivores.

Like I said, there is no sense of moderation. I guess if they limited the amount of cattle that is kept and raised each year, the prices would go up and people might be inclined to eat less meat. I'd be more PO'd if rice prices went up than if meat prices went up.

i usually pick my teeth w/ a vegetarian after i eat a fat rib-eye.

:biglaugh:

I dated a vegetarian for about six months. Sweet girl, but fuck man, eating was a real pain the ass. Especially picking a restaurant.

I guess the omnivores mainly stick with the omnivores and the carnivores stick with the carnivores.

Humans have evolved to eat meat. I'm going to stick with it.

On the border topic. The modern agriculture business is a consolidated consortium of a few companies pumping mainly shit into our bodies.

Eat scratch or cook from scratch is about the only way to go IMO.

EDIT: Not to say we don't need modern argi to feed everyone. It's just that when it's all about profit for a group of people that can fit around ONE table, shit happens to everyone else.

I can't agree with you totally on that post.

Commodities will go up, Energy will go up! China is facing a food crisis of it's own. China is allready buying up land in Africa to support it's needs.

I believe BIG organic is possible and can be cheap. But it's a complicated and expensive system. Starting with your own energy and ending with the finished product. Organic will become competitive in the not too distant future. Simply because all the costs of regular production are going up and labour is getting cheaper. Look at how many unemployed people you have right now. Soon they will work next to nothing! And this financial crisis is just getting started..

Maybe. but if history means anything, china has no problem letting it's own citizens starve to develop an export market of food to the world. Then, when the time comes, I believe they would not hesitate to use food as the ultimate weapon. IMO
