Attaching 6" flange to CAN charcoal filter

Hello all, this is a great site with tons of information. It's been a while since I've sought growing information from the internet ever since OG was shut down. Anyway, I received my CAN charcoal filter yesterday in the mail and I am attaching it to 6" duct to exhaust air. The 6" flange assembly comes with the flange, rubber foam, and 4 or 5 screws, and no instructions whatsoever. From what I can tell, they want you to drill a screw through the flange and into the outer shell of the filter. However, the shell is very thick metal. And as for the rubber foam, I'm not sure where it goes. Does anyone have experience with this that could help me out? Thanks in advance for all your help.

I would guess the rubber foam goes between the flange and the filter to seal it tight when attached. If the screws look like tiny drill bits on the screw end then they are self tapping screws, just get a drill to put them in. They will drill there own hole right in the metal. Good luck.

Had the exact same setup as you. Take the foam and affix it to the back of the flange. You'll be hanging onto the flange when you throw the old filter away. Just find a machining mark on the back of the flange - they are in circular patterns on the back and I used one close to where the flange begins to curve upward to form the 6" tube. Use one of them as a guide to stick the foam to the flange. Use your thumb to press on the top of the foam with one hand and with the other pull the backing off the foam as you go. Once you have the seal in place, place the flange on the filter and drill the holes, in pairs, one opposite the other, splitting the difference, till you've drilled all six. Screw it down and you're done. I set my filter up by the duct I'm going to hook it to but don't actually clamp the ducting to the filter till I need to deal with the smell.

"Take the foam and affix it to the back of the flange."

I thought the foam stripping would go on the top outside of the flange. - is this not correct ?

Also, I thought you wern't suppose to drill holes in a carbon filter. - Does anyone know if this is or isn't the case?

This old thread is one of the only ones' i could find on this subject.

Can anyone shed some light on this .

Edit: I was so lost.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Essentially, you have two choices. You can use the supplied screws and drill, as you mentioned, then seal the outer edges with aluminum tape. Or, you can simply attach the flange to the filter with aluminum tape, bypassing the screws. I've done both. My current pair of Can66s have their flanges attached with tape - strong bond and airtight. Easy peasy.

after playing around I think I've got it. by the way this thread is 3 yrs old. I just didn't want to make a thread.

does the rubber foam go around the bottom exactly, or does it hang below the bottom of the flange a bit, if that makes sense.

The aluminum tape I thought wouldn't work too well, but after experimenting a bit, aluminum tape works great, plus they tell you in bold, do not put any holes in the filter.
