a friend of mine wonders if you put lets say purple food coloring in with the water your watering with. that while growin the buds will become purple.

i told him his an idiot and i think its a bad idea but hes hell bent on trying. so i figure if nobody has a conclusive answer i may kno in a few months

what negative side effects would the food coloring have?

Food coloring wont do that. They actually put dye in many fert products already. I dont see those colors come out.

You want some color in your buds, cool your room down to below optimal temps for the last few days and the purples start showing.

Food coloring won't do anything. Not all strains will purple when you drop temps to below 60 but a lot will. In my experience more indica's will purple compared to sativa's when temps drop.

First, I must agree that this is indeed stupid. Why would he want to do it? It isn't going to make anything more potent or taste better, now will it enhance the plant in any way. It definitely will not compensate for his high temps.

That being said, it does work with cut flowers as little kids know

You may get some slight coloring adding to a growing plant but it will probably only be slight. To see what happened when other kids have tried it try googling "coloring growing plants, food coloring in water"

You might tell him that many strains will turn purple naturally when the weather is cold.

seriously?

so if you did this, and then dip a dried bud in a glass of water, it would turn the water purple, since the dyes are water soluble.....and that's good?

and you're actually going to SMOKE THAT?!? Q: whats in purple food coloring? (or red and blue since there is no purple) A: both red and blue are refined from coal tar with red being refined from petroleum now.
so what happens to that when it's burned? so your going to inhale coal tar & petroleum extract? like 3 grams a day?

THE dumbest idea since dumb ideas

Purple color has NOTHING TO DO WITH POTENCY or FLAVOR, all it means is the strain has an underlying purple coloration, and as chlorophyll production ceases, the underlying colors come out,...just like a maple tree in the late fall with the reds, yellows, and oranges.
getting the NIGHT TIME temps BELOW 65f degrees helps to bring out the color, BUT THAT WILL FUCK UP YOUR YIELD.

I see guys on here going WAAAAAY past what SHOULD have been the harvest date, JUST BECAUSE they are trying to get more purple.

The current purple "craze" is the SECOND dumbest idea since dumb ideas, with the purple dye "cannabis nutrients", being the THIRD dumbest idea, since dumb ideas.

I harvest when it's ready,...PERIOD,.....if it's purple I really don't care,....I get the same effects and price from it either way.

(I'm SURE someone will begin the heckling now)

I feel you Red and I agree but the masses are dumb and they are the ones spending the money so you got to give them what they want sometimes. You can cool the room at the very end with just the right amount of cold air to not lose that much weight but I know what you mean.

The most it would do is cause a small portion of the stalk to change color

It would never make its way to the buds. The childhood test of using Celery and food coloring was made to show you how the plant feeds itself.

I think your friend maybe should sit in on a few Grade 5 science classes again

People spend money on cigarettes which kill them, so just because they will buy it, we should support that? I see your point however, as companies will make what people will buy, with the customers health usually being the last consideration.

ok so I'll retract (modify?) some of the above as you are correct, you CAN drop the temps WAY down (like below 60f) for the last few nights, and it will bring out the purple color, and not screw up the yield at all.

and I will also admit that super dark purple nugs are pretty fucking cool looking.

but please don't use the purple coloring, that's all.

your friends an ass :moon:

Well... what you want me to tell you? Your friend IS an idiot. You can make it turn purple several ways, but really outside of your off ass "bag appeal", it's not going to taste anything like purple unless it was purpled on it's own.

Just out of curiosity, what does purple taste like? Kind of like blue with a dash of red? I like the taste of beige on pizza, personally.
