Get yourself a stepped drillbit, a little pricey, but it will drill about 8 different size holes through plastic perfectly.

Spade bits can rip and tear.

You need a hole saw. It goes on your drill it is made for cutting holes. Get the one made for cutting metal they have them at home depot. Like 15 dollars. Check blazeones hydro bucket thread for the size to fit the 1/2 in grommet or do a search I can't remember the exact size.

twist bits are shit as soon as the point of the drill goes thru the otherside of plastic it will grab and pull in on the helix, unless you are drilling through thick material (more than 5mm) a standard twist drill is rubbish.

go with the holesaw as suggested, but start your hole from one side, getting the 'cup' of the holesaw to go about halfway through your material, then finish from the other side.

this leaves the 'breakaway' area of the plastic in the middle of the hole, so you dont get jagged edges causing water leaks etc.

both sides of the hole are entry points of the holesaw.

hope u understand wtf im on about

When I buy rubber grommets there is two number listed 5/16 7/16 the first number is the size of the hole in the grommet and the second number is the hole size for the grommet

regular bits cause leaks. Not sure you should be growing and building a hydro setup if you don't have cash for a hole saw. Ever hear the expression any jobs easy with the right tool. A hole saw for drilling holes.

i just used a 7/8 drill bit, just a bit too big, had to seal it up with epoxy. I would use a 3/4 inch bit, but i have used a razor blade before...

Use any bit suggested they will all do the same job.

If the drill and bit will fit inside the bucket then drill downwards and place some timber under the bucket.

If the drill wont fit then pop a wooden bock under the upside down bucket to give you a nice rigid surface to drill into and you wont have any problems.

I've got the same issue, except I'm drilling rubbermaid BRUTE tubs for DWC.
I've got plenty of regular bits, damned near brand new, from 1/2" to 3/4" and a stepped bit (if i can find it). Do I really need a hole saw bit? 1/2" is a teeny tiny hole saw bit.....

so the census is use a hole saw at 3/4 for 1/2 grommets. also ive learned the hard wat that spade bits suck from diy ez cloner. was wondering how the step bit works, i mean how do u control whan to stop a the right point and not go to far and make the hole to wide. thankx for all the suggestions.

yeah 1/2 hole on the inside! These Right? I'd say 3/4" bit man fo sho! also, a rubbermaid thing is to thin, u may need epoxy regardless. Buckets are thicker.

Food grade and THICK.
Not cheap, though.
