It was a long 15yrs to go without the sacred smoke, (well I cheated a few times) but as promised to my fellow constituants, I'm back! Times have changed and wow, so has the quality, variety & grow techniques. It's exciting to learn about strain origins/ developement, grow techniques, methods for extraction, proper grow room design etc. It's not uncommon for me to sit down at the computer with a nice bowl and spend a couple of hours easy scanning through forums and websites trying to gain the knowledge so that I too can grow medical grade cannabis like the pros (you guys).
I became a medical card holder last week and where I live we're allowed 6 mature plants so I'm going outdoors first and have been studying the best OD strains for relatively beginner grower, types of soil, security, trimming back sun blocking trees, purchasing nessecities. I have not yet checked out the OD forum & have lots of questions regarding the essentials for a succesful grow. The most important thing for me right now though is to figure security options as my grow site is not the safest. So I'm researching wire security fence panels for an enclosure and I think chain link fencing can be compromised fairly easy with a good pr of wire cutters so do I want to spend almost double for stronger? Yes. How big an area do I need to grow 6 indica dominant plants without having to crowd and pull down and stake branches like every other grow I have done due to lack of available area and/or too many plants. So guys this is my story for now. I look forward to sharing with you and hope to learn what it takes to grow hi grade marjiuana for pleasure and pain too.
Good luck:tiphat:

Hey man, nice to see you're back in the fold.

Regarding your questions, plants outdoors can get really, really big. The following is an indy dom White Widow x Big Bud by a friend of user tokinjoe:

I would give them each at minimum a 4' x 4' space. With aggressive pruning in veg you might be able to cram them into a smaller space, but I'd go with at least 4'x4'. So I'd say maybe 16x16 feet min, 20 x 20 for a good margin.

One thing to keep in mind, 6 plants outdoors will yield a shit load of ganja. If it's just a personal grow, I'd do two plants. Easier to maintain, safer, and easier to protect.

Make sure your soil is in line, and feed them with quality stuff, like Pure Blend Pro (the "for soil" formula).

Hello botsanga,

Welcome. I live right up the road from you about 20 miles. If you don't have a safe place to grow like you want you could always go indoors, especially if it's for personal use. If you are set on doing outdoors, safety from theft is your biggest concern and you can do many things to camofage your space/ plants from view and it will be well worth it. A temporary reed fence perhaps. I've had to tie down plants constantly bending them over to keep them under fence perimeters, but if you don't want all your neighbors seeing your monsters ( pictured in above post ), it's well worth it. Child safety monitors, electric fences, dogs, flood lights with motion detectors, camping in the backyard, taking time off work to be around during the last month or so are all good ideas if possible.

If you are growing only six plants, you want to give them as much space as you can. If they are topped or bent down for concelement, they can become quite wide if you are doing it right. In the above picture, your plant could stretch out well beyond the perimeter of the grow box it's planted in.

Gotta go, Good luck.

Well thanks for the warm and fuzzy welcomes. Holy White Widow x Bigbud there jawnroot. Having unexpected surprises like that in a 6' high enclosure is not something I want to experiance on my 1st grow or any grow for that matter. Crap, I wonder if you climbed it to the top if you could score some magic beans like ol Jock & the Bean Stalk. Probably not, but youd be covered in resin so you'd have to do it like they harvest resin in Nepal, naked & body shaved smooth. By the way, is this really true?
I was just assuming that Indica and Indica doms are generally short & have denser growth? Sativas & Sativa doms are tall and leggy? I guess I'm gonna have to choose the strains more carefully.
I've learned a very important lesson today, and that is to decide how big of an area I can safely grow in first, then choose what varieties have the size characteristics that would fit the grow plot most effectively & efficiently. This makes total sense. It'll be alot easier moving around, watering , finding males, bugs , disease etc.
Just came in from reevaluating the grow site and have decided my previous plot size was to big , with not much concealment increasing a security breach, and realized that even though I am med patient and all leagal to grow I remeber rule #1 for outdoor grows. Be discreet and tell no one that is'nt directley involved in the grow ever. Keep your pesonal stash separate from the bulk of the harvest in a small container or grinder to make it look like your still buying grams or eights. And even though you want to share fruits of the harvest and handing out freebies to your pals or some women that your hoping to get in the sack with, don't. Stoners are smart and will figure you out aand giving free buds to some hottie in hopes of getting a little never worked for me and I'm a super stud. yeah not really.

One thing you can do is put the plants out later. Figure out when the days get to the point where plants will begin flowering. Typically sometime in mid-late July I think? Anyhow, don't start them until, say, end of May, early June, and they'll stay fairly small and manageable (3-4 feet). I'm sure that monster was vegged for quite a while before it got to that size.

botsanga: Congrats on getting your card, thats something I can only dream of (Australian).
I would go for 6 plants, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, imo.
Dont worry about growing a monster like the one in the picture, its prob not going to happen on your first coupla tries. ;)
