I've done both, and though a SOG looked neat, it didn't outyield my old bushes. It took a lot more work, more pots, more soil, more clones (it seems impossible to get enough clones) and was just a pain. Tried a 5 day and a 7 day veg SOG, with anywhere from 9 to 32 plants per 4X4 tray (couldn't fit more with 2 gallon pots) and though it is very strain-dependent, overall yield was greatly diminished. I got a 3 and a 4 pound harvest out of 8 lights, and though there were some problems with the first crop, the second one went pretty well. Not worth it to do on a commercial scale I decided.

Now I'm going back to a 4-week veg with bare bulbs hung between trees (a la DoubleD) with staggered lighting (a la Hydrosun) and Blumat autowaterers (a la Sunny Dog)

Fuck SOG, unless you can produce unlimited clones and can cram a "just-right" spear indica into small pots and pack a ton into trays, it's just a bitch.

Which would you rather have, a room full of these:

Or a room full of these?

Dewd, a SOG is "4 plants per sq foot" NOT "4 sq feet per plant"

Those look about spot on if planted correctly!

I can tell Yosemite has spent some time in the trenches ;)

Unfortunately with 8 lights, and 8 4X4 trays, 4 plants per square foot would have been 512 clones! I had no veg room (power limited) so I had to use the flowering lights to veg. Since I had an inspection every 6 months I barely had time to get two crops in between rounds. As mentioned above, a lot depends on your circumstances, but I think running 500+ clones anywhere is fairly ridiculous.

I also agree with YosemiteSam, mine is a legal med grow but even with ten patients I couldn't be allowed 500+ clones (plus spares.) Cops wouldn't look too fondly on a SOG.

So scale is important, SOG on a large scale is pretty nuts, on a small scale (1-2 lights) it might be more feasible.

no offence, but you didn't do SOG properly if you were running 2g pots. You needed almost twice the numbers and you would have done well, but thats neither here nor there. I wouldn't want either of your pics, that bush looks hurtin.

theres another thread with more info on this...one guy says he gets 2lbs off 600 watts in your square footage with 36 1 gallon SOG and chop the fan leaves off at 3 weeks flowering...imma try that next.
I don't buy that anyone is pulling 2lb on 1 600w. Don't take anything from that post, that is a 1 in a million if he did.

SOG does take a lot more work, and producing clones in the numbers you need will be hard if you can't buy them.

Yeah I figured that the pots were on the large size for SOG, but again, would you really want to spend 3-5K on clones every batch? Who has room for ten mothers just for production, let alone variety?

The bushes actually turned out really well, got about 2oz a plant out of them with a 2 week veg, but with a 4 week veg I get 4-6oz per plant on most strains. Here's a better pic, right before chop:

There are excellent arguments for both. Both can be made to work great (you can find great grows both ways on this very site).

What it really comes down to is your particular circumstances, preferences and comfort levels.

Not to be overlooked would be if you are going to be legal or not. Being legal could very well dictate trees. Even being illegal one has to consider the varying degrees, i.e. the penalties based on plant numbers...or possible penalties.

How good are you at taking clones...not only getting enough for a SOG, but getting an even canopy with the ones you do get rooted. Can you maintain multiple mothers all in perfect health vs one or two or even none for trees.

How much capital do you have to invest up front. A proper SOG is going to have lower running costs but up front costs are going to be higher.

My advice...take a look at grows of different styles...a bunch of both. You will get a feel for which you will be most comfortable with.

In the event of a tie my advise would be start with trees because of lower investment (provided you have enough space for veg). It is easier to add more equipment later and the skills you develop will make the transition to SOG easier.

best advise and post yet..

how can you do sog in 6L pots? I guess some peeps don't know what SOG means, and thrips robbing you of 1lb? 64 plants?? Is that supposed to be a number that takes balls? Something stinks.

Mahalo buddy! I had pretty good results with 9-12 little bushes per 4X4 on a 2 week veg (though, admittedly vegged with 8KW of light!) with a 4 week veg I fit about 4 plants per light. If you prune the shit out of them and lollipop you could maybe do 16 plants per light.

well since you are still waiting for an answer "true" sea of green technique as i understand it is rooted clones planted directly into flower with ZERO veg time. rooted clones packed side to side front to back left to right. how many 4"x4" rockwool cubes can you fit in a 4'x8' tray? thats how many clones you need for that 1 tray.... to do a true SOG. hopefully the plants dont branch and you get a sea of colas. i am of the opinion top do it to the tee you need specific genetics.

yea im aware that 2lbs per 600watt is probably bogus but if i can get 1.5 off the SOG method i will be tits..it involves trimming the big fan leaves after 3 weeks flower to let the lower nugs get more exposure and bulk up. it turns all that popcorn airy shit into bigger nugs, its from that member JRO..

thanks for the 411

after a few years of growing experience under the belt now im of the 9-12 plants per light camp. pruning the bottoms is the only way to go gotta get rid rid of the bottom 30% at least...

^^that looks like what i was describing only using contatiners of medium instead of cubes... looks like 64 in a 3x3 or 4x4 area

good post for reference
