How Shallow (tubs)?

I'm thinking about using tubs for the next run and the ones I have my eye on are dish tubs from the 1$ store. They are about 12" square (not exactly, but the equivalent thereof) but they are only 6" deep, so they'll hold 5" of soil.

Do any of you flower successfully in containers that shallow?

thx

Mine are 47 cm deep Dig. I was thinking of going 1\2 that distance though.

I was talking with MM ad he ´thinks´less soil constitutes a living soil. So, 1ß2 of 47 then is worth a try. My tubs are 100 liters now and they would be 60 I think is the next size down. And those tubs are heavy to move. I build houses and 100 liters, plants and water is tough to lug around if need be.

31 cm- Rubbermaid?

yeah, all my gear is rubbermaid lol. it's a 14 gal (53L) tub, fits right inside a 31 gal. I may scrog just one plant with a big canopy for fun.

>I used them for water containers at my old grow in America. 50 gallons of tea at a time.......man >I wish I had a room like that now!

Wow, that's 18" right? 5" sounds far too shallow then. I will probably skip this experiment.

By the way, space/vertical limitations are the reason I was asking. I do a sort of SOG (not really, but kinda) and was thinking of doing 2 plants per tub (actually 10x14" and 5" deep).

Essentially, I have a very small space but I am searching through 2 dozen seedlings to find a mother plant. So for the next few months I'll be flowering a lot of plants (relative to my space). I am currently running 18-24" tall plants for the next few harvests; right now in 1-gallon pots all crammed together, but thinking of alternatives to that.

Any ideas welcome. I like the idea of tubs more than pots.

22 long 16 wide and 6 deep. got 3 trays setup differently. one has 6 planted from 1/2 gal growbags, another 6 from 16 oz cups. then another a sog mess prob 9 or so.i have used similar tubs many times. roots love it . at the end there is a solid root carpet at bottom of tray.

That's sort of what I'm afraid of, roots heading straight for the bottom, hitting it too soon and then not finding the unused soil and nutrients in the upper few inches of soil, which, in these shallow bins, would account for 50% of the soil mass not being used.

Well hey, dig, I noticed if i mist the soil surface, the roots come up towards the surface, at least with this bagseed I'm running. Now I can't poke through with my finger.

2ndtry said something about cloth to keep it moist. I'm thinking burlap since it breaks down.

i have never had any probs before, except staking can be a bitch with such shallow bins the bamboo stake just dont have enough dirt to hold up extra heavy buds
