I've been waiting a little while to get this thread started.

I popped 10 GHS Hawaiian Snow seeds 37 days ago and have been hand watering them in straight B'Cuzz Coco. I've been taking it real slow this time letting them get bone dry until they were drooping a bit.

I changed my thinking from, "What do I need to give them right now." to "What does it look like they need now." Big difference :biglaugh:

Patience pays dividends for farmers.

Breaking Beans

First thing I do is take the beans out of the package and put them inside my PedEgg (Walgreens). They come with two pieces of sandpaper tape and stick right inside the PedEgg.

Throw the beans in there and do a little dance and shake :dance013:

Now that they are nice and scuffed up I'll soak them in some water for several hours and then put them in a moist paper towel inside the tupperware.

Incubation Chamber

Hydrofarm heating pad with controller set to 85 degrees. ~$40. It's a chunk of change, but it's dumbass proof and I like that. :D

100% Every time!

Day 37

I have some G-Bomb clones that are finally starting to come back to life. They had a rough go of it. :biglaugh:

I just topped the Hawaiian Snow yesterday.

I'm going to be moving the G-Bombs into my mother buckets. I still am in the process of finishing my Veg room. I'm shooting for next weekend.

Should be fun!

Sure is great to see you getting on with the growin' Gramps. I'm really looking forward to seeing you dialing this in. Way to go with the hunnerd percent germ rate too bro. That's the way to do it  and yeah man - "Patience pays dividends for farmers." - never a truer thing said. It's nice to take your time with the ladies, give 'em all they need and in the end they'll repay your efforts in fine style.

Hey, you'll have to give us a smoke report on this Hawaiian Snow when it's all done ;) After all my snooping around in the strain directory this is one of the few that made on to my shortlist here for my next grow. This Hawaiian Snow, Buddha Haze by Big Buddha Seeds and Delahaze & Whiteberry by Paradise Seeds are my top choices. Those plus some others that I've grown before and really, really like :)

OK, I finally have some good green going on lol. I've been staring at my depressing 4x4 in flower for way too long.

Here are a couple of group shots.

I'm going to have the Veg room finished by Thursday. I need to get the G-Bomb out and in the buckets so I can get the nutes right and make space to fatten the HS up.

I was able to identify three different phenos so far.

P1 is decidedly more Indica than the rest.

P2 is more 50/50

P3 is the most sativa

Group shot

Should be fun.

Looking good man! I like the idea of flood & drain , currently using drippers. My mate is always raving about the Hawaiian snow he had in the Dam so I am looking forward to hearing what they turn out like.

Very nice looking plants! It looks like the coco loves you as much as you love it haha

I am using higromite for my flower room, how is the coco in terms of recirc? Do you ever flush your res? I have a float valve hooked to my res so it stays topped off, I just keep the ppm at 1200-1400. What is your approach?

How long does it take for your girls to dry out their pots? I'd imagine you'd water once or twice a day, how long are your flood / drain times? I would guess that the coco would be slower to wick water, but it does still wick as the res is draining, so as long as the roots aren't submerged for more than 20-30 minutes you wouldn't see ill effects anyways (unless you have air pumps, but then why aren't you just rdwc at that point)

My plan used to be drip to waste coco but it was a fiasco, over watered plants stunted themselves for a month or so. Now handwatering coco in the pots when they feel dry...the only way they ever recovered from the overwatering was to wait for the pots to feel light...by now I'm sure they could be flooded on timers now that their roots are established...but you have that lag in any system anways...

damn this casey jones is sweet...thanks santa cruz naturally!

lol peace thanks for sharing

Thanks bud. I'm dying to find out myself :biglaugh:

I treated the Coco much like I did the rapid rooters. Except, since you have a bigger pot of stuff to work with it takes longer to dry out.

I watered the Coco first with some EC .3 nutes, poked a hole in the Coco, and then placed the popped seed in there. I didn't water it again for almost two weeks I think. I was letting the Coco get so dry the plants drooped a little bit. It took forever lol.

I can easily see how over watering is the #1 problem with Coco. It's very counter-intuitive to get used to.

:thank you: I really dig this stuff.

Hardly any Coco gets out. It really stays put. I have filters on my pumps in the rez that I clean every couple of weeks.

I clean my rez's every two months or after a cycle.

Right now the EC is 1.0 and they are just being fed once a day. They could use more feedings, but I've been waiting to get the rest of the stuff to finish my veg room so I can make space.

Drying out time depends on what stage of growth they are in. The clear pots really help see the Coco and the roots and what's going on. I'll get some pictures tonight.

Flood time is 6 mins and then about a 2 minute drain. You don't want to go over 20 minutes total submerged time from what I've read.

I manually water them in the flood table every so how many days until they are established. Then I turn it to once a day. I'm about to crank it to twice a day.

Here is a pic of those pots I was talking about.

You can get them here.

I love them. You can really see what is going on underneath the soil. Priceless info sometimes.

Girls are coming along.

I'll have the G-Bomb moved out tomorrow and the veg room finished.

Thanks for the time you took responding to my questions Gramps, however I have a couple more if you don't mind.

Those clear pots do sound like a good idea helping out in not overwatering coco, and I would recommend those for any grower new to coco!

6 minute fill time is the same length I run, using a 4x4 with a 750gph pump and 3/4" lines. I want that 2 minute drain! Mine takes a good 15 minutes to drain, leaving me uncomfortably close to the limit. What would you suggest in my situation? I'm leaning towards getting a second pump / timer and setting them up to drain the tray a couple minutes following the 6 minute fill. I would really like not having to setup a new timer and pump, so any suggestions that would increase the drainage speed would be greatly appreciated :thank you:

cheers

My lines are 1in ID. The connections on the pumps are 3/4in. What I did was cut a 2in piece of 3/4 hose and put it over the pump connection.

Then I slipped the the 1in ID hose over that assembly and clamped it down with hose clamps.

My advice would be get some 1 ID flood and drain fittings online or at the hydro shop, drill out the holes on your table some more, and use 1in ID hose available at any Home Depot rigged up as stated above. That should help your drain time quite a bit.

Hope that helps. Ask away.

Thanks for the advice Gramps! Much appreciated :thank you: I recently timed how long it takes to fill (5mins) and it takes 10 to drain, so a total of 15 minutes to fill and drain. If I start to see signs of over watering or stunted growth I will heed your advice :)

One more question...what gallon per hour is your pump rated? Or at least wattage if you are unsure?:thank you: I ask because a friend mentioned that increasing the diameter of the tube to 1" ID (it's at 1/2" ID atm) would make the pump not work because of the increased work it had to do? Except the run isn't very long at all maybe 2 ft max from the floor to the bottom of the tray so I can't see a complete failure of the pump from only increasing ID by 1/2" on a 750gph pump...it ran my 8 site bio buckets rdwc just fine so I think it can fill a damn tray...I'm in a calculus class and we're doing these problems finding the amount of work required to pump water out of reservoirs using integrals and the difference in work between a .5 and 1" diameter isn't all that much more when you're talking about a 750gph pump...

Man, this kief has me all racy and shit.

Thanks again!

I was using an Ecoplus 396, but I broke the tip off of it. It took longer to fill, but I had no trouble keeping the total time under 10mins.

I bought a 750gph Mag drive pump after that. It really pushes the water out of there in a hurry.
