Magnum XXXL hood?

pointless. The only hood I'll ever need is the Super Sun 2. Perfect for 1000's, perfect for 600's and fairly affordable.

I just bought 2 "Great White" reflectors. They are the same as the Magnum xxxl, but without the reflective insert. (IMHO, the reflective pebbled instert stuff is junk, a white reflective surface does a better job reflecting and diffusing the light).
I used to think the Sunlight Supply "Cool Sun" was the best reflector money could buy. But now I'm convinced these giant reflectors are worth the extra dough. They have a HUGE light footprint, and they stay way cooler because of the large amount of space inside the reflector. Plus they're FRIGGIN HUGE!

I don't like all these huge hoods. I think the larger the hood the longer distance the light has to go before being reflected, and even that reflected light has a little more distance to go before hitting the canopy because of the design.

I think the side wall's angle has a lot more to do with the shape and size of the footprint than the size of the reflector. Appears to be just an unnecessarily large reflector IMHO. :2cents:

I'm really digging these SuperSun 2's myself. Just got another one the other day to replace a Daystar AC. Still unsure on the performance difference on the reflective material and footprint but I strongly feel that the SuperSun 2's are designed and built a lot better.

(The reflective insert slid out of position; it's back in position now.)

Note how much less turbulence there is on the SS2. Not only is the socket holder aerodynamic, but the A/C flange tube wall extends into the reflector to meet the reflective material, rather than leaving large gaps.

I know this is old, but surely someone has some experience with the hoods by now. I'm looking for a good air cooled hood with a nice sized footprint. What are you guys using?

See "Pico's" thread on testing reflective hoods.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=51325

I have 6 xxxl's and I love them. Hands down the coolest operating hoods (they retain and exhaust the heat and are always cool to the touch even with very little air flow moving through the hoods) I've ever operated.

Pico's test shows these hoods having the best light distribution of all hoods currently tested (better the SS2's by about 5% if I recall). I believe these hoods were tested about 2/3's of the way into the thread.
They are heavy but I think they are worth the price and weight for me.

My post from another thread:

All of the reflectors were tested at a minimum distance of 18". As such, if one's setup allows for a lower height above the plants, the results aren't necessarily applicable. Let me give an example. My big room runs 600HPS' with their SS Cool-Sun reflectors sitting ~10-12" above the canopy. Based on that thread, I bought a SS2 to test. At the same height (10-12" above the canopy), the SS2 doesn't have anywhere near the coverage and dispersion of a Cool-Sun, even though the test pointed to an alternate conclusion. I'm actually waiting for another Cool-Sun to arrive sometime tomorrow. I guess I'm trying to say that one must gauge the information per his garden's config.

Just turned mine on for the first time yesterday, has a great footprint. Personally for my 4x4 tables I think this reflector will be perfect. A lot of people don't like the size of it, but personally its just right for me.

I believe my other 1000 watt reflector is an old sun system cool sun reflector, which was the best reflector when I bought it years ago. I can tell the new Magnum XXXL has a better design though. With more 95% German Alluminum to reflect on the sides as well as angling the end panels to be able to reflect light. The design of the magnum also allows air to move more freely. It also has a better footprint for my 4x4 table which will be nice. From top to bottom its very slim as well, which I was impressed with.

You can't go wrong with this reflector unless your stuck on how big it is.

I like SS-2's and coolsuns. However, If I could afford to pick up 16 xxl's I would run them in a heartbeat. photo metrics guys. read up. The coolest running hood would be a Tube for very obvious reasons. to be honest its what I usually use because I have more than enough lighting. they throw extremely wide, and with the right fan/duct combo, I can get down to 10" above the canopy and still cover plenty of space. now that SS has an 8" suntube, I might splurge on a few for a vert grow. the quality of the reflector really depends on the methods of which you grow. if you grow trees, its all about a SS-2. if your flipping at 6-12'' I go with a or a tube. thats why I would love to run xxl's... if your flipping at 16"-30" I recommend a Bell, or Coolsun2. even yieldmasters have spot in the running for mid size plants. the shape of the reflector should give you a good idea of how it throws. SS1, SS2, Daystars, throw deep. the big ass parabolic, xxl, greatwhite, tubes throw wide. watch out for reflectors with multiple rigid bends as every bend is a potential hot spot. Hence why I like bells, greatwhites, XXL's and adjust a wings for uncooled grows. in all honesty, I could make a pie tin or even tinfoil to make a reflector that works for the application at hand. I'm just a gear snob and love having cool shit that works really well. I have seen the xxl in action and its a NICE reflector. Pebbletone???? I like polished aluminum or White personally, but the XXL comes in 8" and I need that. hope this helps.

Hey toohighmf, I'm using 600's and flipping at about 22". I'm thinking of going with cool suns or yield master 2 supremes... what do you think of these choices? There is no "cool sun 2" is there? I couldn't find one. Anything better that might suit me? Two lights in a 4x8 tent.

I think there is a coolsun2 and I know they now make an 8" coolsun. can't remember off hand if that is indeed the coolsun2 8". I would go with that because tents need all the cooling they can get. Unless of course there's a 8" yieldmaster that I don't have.

just got 6 brand new yield master 2 supreme, i really like the coverage and size for my application. But, i don't really like the fact the glass doesn't slide in a tray. its going to be pretty sketchy when its time to clean the glass.

The XXL's are the best reflectors out right now if you have the space...

12 of them in here:

Have a friend that uses two of them on movers. He get's outstanding results.

After my first harvest, I'm changing out my rinky dink hood with one of the XXXL ocho's. Eventually, I want to have two on movers as well.
