What's new

Anyone else think TV is crappier than ever?

I have basic satellite TV, (directv), so what's with all the bad shows lately? I don't mean lame necessarily, those shows have been around forever. I mean shows with bad subject matter, glorifying or giving attention to things that should be discouraged. Axe Men, Swamp Loggers, DEA, a show on women cops, and worst of all, now a show projecting a state of apocalypse if there was no more oil! We need to get off that dirty nasty shit, not spread propaganda on the virtues of oil. Substitutes exist for every use that are clean and ecologically sound. Has NatGeo been bought out by Exxon-Mobil by any chance? So let's hear what shows you consider bad, vent about it and you will feel better. Personally, I think they have beat the "reality TV" concept into the ground, leave that dead horse alone already. What's next, a show on shitting contests to see who "can shit the biggest"? :D Why not more informative nature and science shows, space travel sci-fi, and other shows where you learn something? Throw in some mindless movies or sitcoms if you must, but a show on how they make nails or bread is like watching paint dry!

I'll admit I didn't read half of your post. However, I definitely agree that 90% of television... no wait.... 95%!!!! of television is a load of crap.

I'll refer to my most beloved stations: National Geographic and Discovery. Both have been making some real half assed shows lately involving stupid gimmicks and retarded hosts. Just give me monkeys and kick ass high def footage that I'll never get to witness in real life! FUCK!

why not Randy? I tried to edit in paragraph seperations but it looks the same as ever for some odd reason! weird!

But yes I agree, NatGeo has been really dissappointing lately

No worries, I'm sure it's a combination of the paragraphs and my lack of patience due to extreme booze intake tonight.

What boggles me about NatGeo and Discovery is the amount of very wicked footage they sit on, yet they play this junk.

I'm old enough to remember when there was only two TV channels, in black and white, and people watched just anything that was on - no matter how ridiculous - because it was TV!

Oh, and I played with Dinky toy cars and customized pine cones, because I wasn't allowed to watch.

Me thinks you're suffering from a spleenish existence in an overdrive mass-media society.

You have what, at least 50 channels, broad-band internet, still everything's boring?

There's a cure. Go out in the woods at night.

I take that post as a dig, correct me if I am wrong. I was happy with what was on not that long ago when Naked Science and The Universe were on regularly. I am just saying the caliber of shows in the last few weeks especially and to some extent the last year or two has gone downhill. That does not mean there is something wrong with me as you are implying, but something wrong with what they air.

My TV cable has been unplugged since July 2003. I only watch pre-recorded material that I've been collecting over the years. Finding the worthwhile stuff has become a part-time hobby. So I only watch the shows I enjoy, such as sci-fi, science, history, and good films. Commercials don't exist.

My advice: abandon TV wasteland, because it's hopeless. Instead, go online for a few minutes and grab some real entertainment! Pretty soon you'll have several thousand good shows in your growing collection :D

No, I don't think there's anything wrong with you Red Fang, unless there's something wrong with being human.

I think most of us are victims of the society we live in, it's just a question of to what degree you're sucked in.

yes I watch a lot of recorded stuff too. just not a lot to record these days. and for those who think a confrontational post was "helpful", you have a lot to learn. I am just asking a question here and it is a reasonable one. I am not a spoiled rich kid who had the top cable package available and had to cut back due to the economy and now have a lower package and am whining about it. I have basic cable because of the switch from analog or I'd still have that. I admit I could never go back to analog now, even the less than spectacular lineup is better than watching a handful of fuzzy channels, yeah I know what that's like too. But common, expecting something better than all these crappy home videos shows or manswers (although once in a while that has good stuff) is not unreasonable! My gripe is mainly that Spike no longer has any Star Trek and what it replaced it with is dreadful.... history channel no longer has any good shows either.... NatGeo has gone downhill on shows too.... and the Sci-Fi channel is a watered-down version of its former self since it became available on the basic package (I used to get the premium channels every so often as a rare fluke or something). And why do cable stations have commercials? Isn't that why you have to pay to watch them? There should be no commercials!
