I just helped out (October thru January) Jack who I thought was a 'best friend' he's been 'on the lam' from a wrongful court case since October, I lent him money, ran errands (couldn't show his face for shopping), spoke to lawyers (on MY dime), let him cook & do laundry here, etc.......

all in all he's into me for well over $1,000 and what can I say but he's used up too many favors (by me specifically) in this routine, in the 14 yrs I've known him I've asked him for his help about 3 or 4 times for such trivial things as a ride home from my mechanics shop.

so his landlord (my good friend Russ) cleans out Jacks possessions while he's in jail after finally going to court, Jack owed over $3,000 in back rent by now and so Russ has stored it all hoping to get a new renter in the house.

So Jacks in jail since mid January & I send him $75 for his commissary account, I send him a $50 phone card which he used to call me several times, in one call he asks me to let a friend of his into the house (Russ the home owner had given me keys years ago for security reasons) to remove a few things, I explain to Jack that the house is now empty & to talk to Russ when he gets out.

Jack gets sprung today and comes by my crib (I was outside w/my dogs) and starts blaming me for him losing all of his stuff (which by law Russ must give back) and how I let him down, accusing me of being a fair weather friend etc, in the meanwhile he wouldn't get out of his truck to face me down, like a coward he did his bitching from a distance

this guy Jack has now lost his home (rental), he's lost entirely his barber shop business & all of its fixtures (seized legally by his other landlord) by the courts. He comes unglued on me trying to blame me for his issues, he wouldn't even leave his truck to face me like a man so I couldn't steal his dignity w/an ass whuppin', I did the next best thing.......

I called his mother (she & I are friends too) to tell her that after all I did for Jack he's acting like a jerk etc knowing full well that he's moving in with mama (punishment enough imo) tonight until he can get back on his feet, gonna be years

no more mr. nice guy, screw w/me and I'm tellin' mommy.

LOL!

He needs someone to vent to and unfortunately it looks like YOU are the number 1 guy of choice. (At least for the time being).

He probably bitches to his mom, you, the judge, anyone that will listen and there pretty much is nothing you can do for this guy anymore. Your only worry now is that you'll see your $1,000.00 back. In a worst case scenario (if you lose the money) many of us have lost much more money over much worse scenarios.

You've helped out as much as you can, it's time to sit back and see how it plays out. All you can do is ask for your money back at this point. It looks like from here you can't help the guy out any longer!

I've seen him talk to his mother in a way that shows ZERO respect to her & she's his biggest advocate, you hit the nail right on the head w/that one bro.

the money I already knew was going to be a lost cause, he's 20K behind in child support as well as other issues, it was all I could do to help someone desperate to stay outta jail.

EDIT:
And yeah, I didn't call his mom to bitch at her (I spoke very respectfully to her) just to fill her in.

gotta give him a small break. If he appologizes he's ok, if not screw him. He is in a shitty situation which should be adding to his pressure. But if was not like was being extreme on you maybe things will work out later. if not screw him.

I always lend money never expecting to get it back. That way i lend less and don't feel bad after wards.

Good lesson. Pick your friends very carefully. It's shouldn't be a mistake you make twice. SC.

draw a line. your survival means more than his leaching, im sure he dosent mean it but bring reality to him.everyone else does it and hes got too, also.somtimes tough choices as trivial as they seem are neccesary. you are a good friend reguardless, his parents cant do it they are in a denial stage where they would never dis-own their son,but its a wake up call.

more fool Jack for not realising a real friend when he has one... his loss

edit - maybe you'll forgive him with time, but he did need to stop taking your support for granted in any event.

Sorry to hear that a trusted friend turned out to be a POS--
But on the upside...it only cost you a thousand bucks...to find out that a once trusted friend...is no good--
Could have been a lot worse--:comfort:

very true & I already knew he was so far in debt that I'd never see that money again and although I had enough cash on hand I was NOT gonna front his bail. friend or not you make your bed you lie in it, I helped him stay out of the slam as long as I could but once there it's family that gets you out.

No way was I gonna risk 5K and not seeing it again.......

and hey what the heck, might as well fill you in on the rest of Jacks backbone or lack thereof.

the first two times he called me from jail he was crying like a baby, no lie, no exaggeration, I insisted he get a grip or he'd be targeted as a bitch. this guy's 46 yrs old and did hard time (it's where he learned barbering) in the penitentiary over 20 yrs ago so he knows the gig.

I don't ever try to mind my friend's business but this time he had me acting on his behalf all over the county, everywhere I made inquiries I was told he's used his last favor (including his lawyer so I had to pay for a sit down) and incurred his last debts in nearly every case, nobody was willing to go to bat for him.

as mentioned he was just released & that was due to a 'FAST APPEAL' given to those w/short time (6 months or less as appeals normally take months to process) hanging over them, done quickly so as not to be released near end of sentence.

in my first paragraph I said it was a wrongfully brought case & his appeals judge said, "Judge Haggan wouldn't dare show his face to answer to this, you were made an example of," he then released Jack. I'm happy for him really, he didn't deserve a minutes time for this offense.......
